In SteamWorld Build, players participate in two main game phases. First, they build and manage a mining town on an alien planet. This includes building roads, houses, and amenities to meet the needs of the town’s residents, with the goal of making them happy.

Progress is measured by milestones relative to the total population. As players repair the mines, a second phase is unlocked, shifting the focus to exploring the abandoned mines. Here, they recruit miners, equip them with weapons, and collect resources, including ore, to expand the town.

Miners delve deep into the mines in search of ancient technology that might help players escape Earth. This dynamic combination of city-building and dungeon exploration creates an engaging, multi-faceted gameplay experience. SteamWorld Build is developed by The Station and published by Thunderful Publishing, and will be released on multiple platforms on December 1, 2023.

Steamworld Build Development

SteamWorld Build is developed by a 40-person team at The Station, a studio under Thunderful Development. Series director Brjánn Sigurgeirsson oversaw development, marking the first time a SteamWorld game was not developed by an original Swedish team. The Station, previously known for its contributions to the LittleBigPlanet games, began this city-building and dungeon-exploring project in early 2020.

The developers drew inspiration from Ubisoft’s Anno series and Bullfrog Productions’ Dungeon Keeper series, aiming to seamlessly blend the game’s two distinct gameplay styles. The storyline runs parallel to SteamWorld Dig 2 and includes new and familiar characters from previous SteamWorld games.

Thunderful Development originally announced their work on four SteamWorld games in May 2022, with the SteamWorld Build codenamed “Coffee.” The game was officially released in January 2023 with a free demo.
