Copycat Format

Taskmaster has a unique and entertaining format in which five contestants (mostly comedians) engage in a comedic battle of wits by taking on various assigned tasks. The tasks, handed to them by Taskmaster’s assistants, are tri-folded, sealed with red wax, and marked with a “TM” and range from simple physical challenges to complex or artistic endeavors. With supervision and occasional assistance from comedian Alex Horne, contestants must read tasks aloud and then demonstrate their skills, creativity and intelligence to achieve their goals.

Greg Davies, the titular master of impersonation, serves as a judge, assessing each contestant’s performance in each task and awarding a score, usually ranging from 1 to 5. The contestant with the highest cumulative score at the end of the series will receive the coveted trophy, a golden bust of Greg Davies himself. Not only did the win bring prestige, but it also qualified the winner for future episodes of “Champion of Champions” with a trophy in the form of a full-body golden statue of Davis. The special “New Year’s Treat” episode, which featured celebrities outside the realm of comedy, introduced a different trophy to the victorious participant – a golden statue of Davis’ eyebrows.

Tasks vary from simple, timed challenges to more complex team efforts that require competitors to use logic, creativity and lateral thinking. Contestants can earn bonus points or face disqualification based on task performance. The show is set around Taskmaster’s house, a former groundskeeper’s cottage in Dukes Meadows, Chiswick, and the mission was largely pre-recorded. The studio section features introductory prize missions and a final “live” mission, adding variety to the format. In the event of a tie, tiebreaker missions or quick real-time missions will determine the ultimate winner, ensuring suspense and unpredictability throughout the show.
