The 10 Best Movies To Watch For Galentine’s Day

Every February for Valentine’s Day, many viewers look for films that remind them of love, romance, and relationships, in honor of the holiday. However, the popularity of “Galentine’s Day”, a day of celebrating female and female-presenting friendships, has rapidly increased in recent years, since its creation in a Parks and Recreation episode in 2010. Because of this, the best films to watch on Galentine’s Day celebrate the fun, excitement, and importance of friendship.

For example, films such as Francis Ha, are heartfelt love letters about the importance of friendship while navigating the loneliness and confusion of young adulthood, while comedies like Bridesmaids are hilarious tributes to the chaos and fun that comes from adventures with girlfriends. At the end of the day, a good Galentines’ Day film can span across multiple genres and time periods, but it reminds its viewers about the beauty of having healthy platonic relationships in life that are fulfilling as much as they are exciting.

Noah Baumbach’s cult classic, Frances Ha, is one of the best ways to celebrate Galentine’s Day. The film, which stars Greta Gerwig as Francis in one of her best films, tells the story of a dancer who struggles to find her place in the world as a young adult living in New York City. Amidst the chaos, Frances’ challenges are made more difficult when her best friend and roommate, Sophie (Mickey Sumner), have a falling out. Though Frances Ha involves Frances’ personal difficulties and challenges during the period of the film, one of her constants is her friendship with Sophie.

Throughout the film, the two experience growing pains in their relationship when Sophie gets serious with her boyfriend. However, in the end, the women find their way back to one another, this time, with a renewed sense of respect and understanding. Though Frances doesn’t find love in the romantic sense, (something she claims she desires in an earlier speech), she finds it in her platonic relationship with Sophie. In its famous last scene, the two catch each other’s eyes at a party, and it’s clear they have found their “person” in life.

One of the best ways that girlfriends can be helpful is when it comes to heartbreak. This is embodied by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s hit Netflix dramedy, Someone Great. This film tells the story of Jenny (Gina Rodriguez,) a music journalist who is dumped by her boyfriend before moving across the country for work. On her final night in town, her friends come together to cheer her up with a proper send-off. Someone Great may be a comedy, but it has many heartbreaking and emotional moments baked in.

Though the main event of the film revolves around her breakup with longtime boyfriend, Nate (LaKeith Stanfield), the real focus of the film is her friendship with Blair (Brittany Snow) and Erin (DeWanda Wise). For viewers who have navigated heartbreak, their tactics for lifting her spirits are familiar, from jamming out in the kitchen to breakup songs like Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts,” to roping Jenny into going out and partying for her final night in New York. Someone Great reminds audiences that the joy that comes from female friendship is the perfect medicine for heartbreak.

Heartbreak is also cured by the power of female friendship in the 2008 feature film, Sex and the City, a movie sequel to the original hit series. The film follows Carrie and her friends four years after the events of the season finale, with Carrie in her relationship with Big. Just as Carrie is about to have her dream wedding (Chris Noth), things go awry when he leaves her at the altar, but the girls are there to support a heartbroken Carrie.

Though Carrie’s breakup with Mr. Big is the main event, all of the leading ladies endure a challenge that requires them to lean on one another. Miranda turns to the girls for advice when she discovers infidelity in her doomed marriage, and Charlotte asks for help while dealing with the physical constraints of pregnancy. In the end, the women manage to have fun with one another despite their struggles, going on vacation, having slumber parties, and hitting the town at night in classic Sex and the City fashion. For fans of the franchise, this is the perfect Galentine’s watch.

Personalities also clash in the Penny Marshall classic, A League of Their Own. In this historical sports film, a team of women is chosen to play in the first professional baseball league during the events of World War II. Siblings Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) create tension with their rivalry, navigating the different personalities and priorities of the group.

A League of Their Own has also been adapted into a limited Amazon series that ran in 2022. The series goes deeper into the relationships of the teammates, exploring how intersectionality plays a role in their experience in the league.

A League of Their Own is a powerful and inspirational watch. Beyond its focus on reaching the championships in the league, the film is really about the importance of female friendship and allyship in the face of struggle and challenge. While many women have differing viewpoints on their views of society and womanhood, each learn to respect each other by the end, whether it be to remain with the league or return to their marital/ domestic roles. Important issues of sexism and gender constraints are also tackled in the film.

Another teen friend group reunites in the 2002 film, Crossroads. This Britney Spears acting-debut film follows a trio of childhood friends who reunite after graduation to embark on a road trip across the country to fulfill the dreams they hoped to accomplish in a time capsule they buried years before.

Crossroads is a heartwarming watch about the endurance of friendship over the years. Though the girls have all changed by the time of graduation, they soon grow close again over their connected past and shared goal. Along the way, they open up to one another, supporting each other through a series of difficult challenges, such as Lucy’s (Britney Spears) rejection by her absent mother, and Kit (Zoe Saldaña) discovering her boyfriend cheated on her. Of course, along the way, the girls have fun moments, singing in the car, going to the bars, and doing karaoke, all to a hit soundtrack.
