This remake of the 1978 cult classic is not for the faint of heart, or for the weak of stomach. When author Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) rents a cabin in Louisiana for some solitude to work on her book, she accidentally offends a group of local men who then trap her in the house and brutally gang rape her. Jennifer then seeks out her revenge by stalking the men, killing them off one by one in merciless ways.

I Spit on Your Grave is a grindhouse exploitation of disturbing violence and gore that found its audience among cult horror lovers.

Like its predecessor, I Spit on Your Grave is a grindhouse exploitation of disturbing violence and gore that found its audience among cult horror lovers. It definitely is not for everyone, but for those who revel in the truly disturbing material of a niche genre, this may be their cup of tea. Late film critic Roger Ebert famously hated both the remake and the original, but I Spit on Your Grave has its defenders.

Shock rocker and horror icon Rob Zombie continued the gritty horror movie saga of the murderous Firefly family in The Devil’s Rejects. The gory sequel to House of 1000 Corpses sees Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis (Bill Moseley), and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie ) on the run from the law as they terrorize members of a band in a hotel room, while determined sheriff John Wydell (William Forsythe) goes to extreme lengths to end their killing spree.

Fans who couldn’t get enough of the Firefly clan from Zombie’s first movie won’t want to miss the Fangoria Chainsaw-award winning sequel. Influenced by films like Bonnie and Clyde and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Devil’s Rejects is a blood-soaked wild ride filled with darkly disturbing elements that cater to only the most die-hard horror fans. From the creeptacular minds of Jen and Sylvia Soska, aka The Twisted Twins, American Mary is a little-known Canadian horror film that takes body horror to a new level. In American Mary, Katharine Isabelle plays the titular protagonist, a broke med student who takes under-the-table jobs performing extreme plastic surgery for the body modification community while seeking revenge against the professor who assaulted her.

Isabelle is most famous for playing another titular horror protagonist — Ginger in the Ginger Snaps franchise — and the Soskas wrote the role of Mary specifically for her. Isabelle imbues Mary with tragic gravitas, as she goes from promising future doctor to vengeful killer, and she’s backed up by some excellent supporting performances. Tristan Risk as the kindhearted Beatress Johnson is a particular standout, as are the Soskas themselves, who cameo as a pair of the scariest twins in horror movie history. Add in positive commentary on the body mod community, and American Mary is a horror movie that deserves more attention.

House of 1000 Corpses was Rob Zombie’s first film, and the metal rocker left his unique mark when he entered the world of cinema. A group of friends on a road trip pick up a curious hitchhiker named Baby. After some car trouble, Baby offers to let them stay at her family’s home. Little do the friends realize the horrors that await them, as Baby’s family is a group of sadistic killers with murder on their minds.

All Hallow’s Eve filmmaker Damien Leone gave the homicidal Art the Clown his own feature in 2018’s Terrifier. Friends Dawn and Tara go out on Halloween night when they witness a man dressed as a clown being kicked out of a pizzeria. Art targets the two girls and savagely murders them. When Tara’s sister Victoria shows up, she finds that she is too late to save them, but is just in time to be Art’s next victim.

Leone’s monochromatic killer clown has become a new familiar face in the slasher genre, to the delight of horror fans.

The film that spawned everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed killer doll, Child’s Play introduced Chucky, a “friend to the end” with the soul of a serial killer wrapped in a small plastic body. Charles Lee Ray escapes death by using a forbidden voodoo ritual that transports his soul into a Good Guy doll, only to be gifted to young Andy Barclay by his unsuspecting mother, Karen. The doll terrorizes Karen and her son, hoping to transfer his soul into Andy’s body.

The Child’s Play franchise has a unique premise and singular baddie that many films and shows have tried to emulate to this day. The movie spawned four sequels and an original series that combines over-the-top scares, slasher fun, and dark humor that fans have come to know and love.

In the first film of the decades-long franchise, a hedonist named Frank purchases a puzzle box that he believes will show him infinite pleasures. Instead, the box opens the way for the Cenobites, otherworldly beings who thrive on sadomasochistic torture. Frank is torn apart by the evil beings, though later receives help from his former lover to revive him with the blood of innocents.

There’s a good reason why Hellraiser has had such sustaining power over the years, even if the film franchise may have gone somewhat downhill. The original movie continues to be a terrifying thrill ride that gives audiences top-tier special effects and unforgettable, nightmare-inducing visuals.

The British film The Descent was met with huge success upon its release in the US in 2006. One year after the tragic deaths of her husband and daughter, a woman named Sarah goes on a spelunking trip with a group of friends in North Carolina. The women get more excitement than they bargained for when a cave-in traps them inside a series of deep underground tunnels — one filled with terrifying cannibalistic creatures who begin picking them off one by one.

Sure enough, David turns into a creature of the night at the next full moon, wreaking havoc on the streets of London.

Although Stephen King notoriously hates the movies adapted from his novels, the 1976 original Carrie nonetheless became a horror classic. Teenager Carrie lives with her abusive mother, a religious zealot. Her life is made all the more hellish by bullies at school, but things seem to turn around when the handsome popular boy, Tommy, invites her to prom. Of course, it turns out to be a cruel prank — one that the other teens will come to regret, as unbeknownst to them, Carrie has telekinetic powers.

Carrie is not only a film about supernatural vengeance, but about the horrors of abuse and teen angst. The movie’s climactic bucket of blood scene will forever live in the minds of horror fans, as will the powerful writing and stellar performances of the actors.

While Robert Eggers’ 2024 remake of Nosferatu was a huge critical and box office success, one must not forget the original inspiration that made cinema history over a hundred years ago. Closely following the story Dracula, a young man named Thomas Hutter goes to Transylvania and meets the strangely pale and eccentric Count Orlok. Thomas realizes that Orlok is actually a vampire far too late, as the wicked creature of the night targets Thomas’s beautiful bride-to-be, Ellen.
