The 15 Best Zoey Deutch Movies, Ranked

From rom-coms to intense thrillers, Zoey Deutch continues to propel herself into Hollywood stardom. The daughter of Back to the Future actress Lea Thompson and frequent John Hughes collaborator Howard Deutch, she has worked on a variety of movies, shining in supporting roles and eventually working her way up to prove herself as a lead actor. She has shared the screen with fellow rising stars like Glen Powell as well as Oscar winners like Mark Rylance and Emma Stone.

While her first role was on The Suite Life on Deck, her versatile performances since have made her a growing star. From working with acclaimed director Richard Linklater to leading one of Netflix’s most popular romantic comedies, Deutch’s performances have been well-received by fans and critics alike while the movies themselves do moderate to well for the most part. Returning to the screen in Clint Eastwood’s latest (and possibly last movie), Deutch continues to be an impressive young talent.

As with many actors, Zoey Deutch’s early career began with her trying to stand out in smaller roles. Starring alongside Zoë Kravitz and Kid Cudi, Deutch plays Kate in the crime thriller Vincent N’ Roxxy about rebellious city girl Roxxy who meets rural loner Vincent after being pursued by a drug dealer. As soon as the two start to gain feelings for each other, they realize that they are being pursued by violent and revenge-seeking criminals and must escape if they want to live.

In one of her first movie parts, Deutch plays a supporting role and while the script was criticized for being underdeveloped and overly convoluted by several audiences, the performances were well-received, particularly Kravitz’s. Despite the size of Deutch’s role, she manages to bring a likable quality to her character in a movie that is lacking in likable characters.

For any actor to work alongside acting legend Robert De Niro, it is sure to be a career highlight. However, Zoey Deutch had the pleasure of working with the Oscar winner in something very different from his usual acclaimed work. Dirty Grandpa is a comedy that stars Zac Efron as a young man who takes his grandfather (De Niro) on a road trip following the death of his wife. However, once on the road, his grandfather reveals that the trip is his introduction into single life, with drugs, drinking, and sex.

Deutch gets in on the wild fun as Shadia, a girl the grandfather and grandson meet at Spring Break who becomes the love interest for Efron’s character. While the movie is far from high-brow entertainment, there is some fun in seeing just how much it leans into its R-rating while also giving De Niro a truly outrageous comedic role to play.

Flower (2017)

As Erica Vandross

Zoey Deutch looking surprised in Flower

In one of her first leading roles, Zoey Deutch stars as rebellious 17-year-old Erica in the dramedy Flower, who feels her home life changed when the son of her mom’s boyfriend, Luke, played by the late Joey Morgan, comes to live with them. After she discovers that Luke suffers from trauma after being abused by a teacher, Erica and her friends make it their mission to hunt down the abuser and expose his secret.

She is a big part of the reason the movie works at all, delivering a hilarious performance with layers.

While the movie has a bold premise that could have made for a truly interesting dark comedy, it never manages to find the right tone to make it work. However, as a showcase for Deutch in a leading role, Flower is exceptional. She is a big part of the reason the movie works at all, delivering a hilarious performance with layers. She even manages to outshine some of the veteran comedic actors in the film, like Kathryn Hahn and Andrew Scott.

Samantha leaning against a wall in Before I Fall

Based on the best-selling book, Before I Fall takes a new adaptation of the time-loop-day storyline by following Samantha, played by Deutch, a mean girl who must relive the last day of her life and figure out what she needs to do in order to survive. As the movie goes along, she starts to reflect on the person she is and the people she hurt.

Deutch’s performance received notable praise from critics and audiences alike, with Deutch receiving a Teen Choice Award nomination for Best Actress in the Drama category. She brought an endearing and raw performance that took the film out of the teen thriller genre and delivered an intriguing story of this young woman reflecting on who she is as a person. While so many of Deutch’s starring roles focus on her comedic skills, this movie showcased the many sides of her talents.

While Zoey Deutch and Nicholas Holut recently teamed up in the cast of Juror #2, the first time they worked together was in the biopic Rebel in the Rye. Hoult stars in the movie as JD Salinger, as the film takes a look at his early life as an inspiring writer, the trauma he endured fighting in the war, and his subsequent efforts to write one of the most influential novels of all time, Catcher in the Rye. Deutch costars as Oona O’Neill, the daughter of playwright Eugene O’Neill, who shares a romantic relationship with Salinger.

The movie is an intriguing look into the creation of a masterpiece of literary history. With Salinger being such a fascinating character, it is a little disappointing how cliché this examination of his life ends up being. However, the performances are good, with Hoult bringing layers to the complex lead while Deutch is alluring as his love interest.

As impressive as Zoey Deutch’s dramatic skills are, she has shown many times in her career that she is able to hold her own comedically with some very funny stars. Why Him? is a wild comedy that stars Bryan Cranston as a father who comes to meet his daughter’s new boyfriend. However, when he comes to quickly hate her new tech-billionaire beau (played by James Franco), he decides to do whatever he can to ensure that they do not get engaged.

Cranston and Franco have a lot of fun playing off their odd couple dynamic. Franco is funny as the obnoxious and oblivious rich man, while Cranston has a lot of fun as the cranky father who is a fish out of water in the world of luxury. However, Deutch manages to shine without much material, giving personality to her role as Cranston’s daughter, Stephanie, which makes her romance with Franco make more sense.

Zoey Deutch had the chance to work with her entire family in The Year of Spectacular Men. In her mother, Lea Thompson’s, directorial debut, Deutch co-starred with her sister, Madelyn Deutch, who also wrote the script. Madelyn Deutch plays Izzy, who graduates from college and deals with the tumultuous post-graduate experience as well as the various men that come into her. Zoey Deutch plays Madelyn’s sister, a successful actor who nonetheless encourages Izzy to find her purpose.

Thompson makes for a strong director in her first time behind the camera while also reminding people of her acting talents in the role of Izzy. The Deutch sisters are also sharing visible chemistry, while Zoey Deutch gives a profound and moving performance in a role that feels tailor-made to show off her many talents. It makes for a funny and charming coming-of-age story for young adults.

Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)

As Madison

One of Zoey Deutch’s most profitable movies at the box office, she joined one of the most successful horror comedies in the sequel Zombieland: Double Tap. The movie picks up with the main characters of the first installment seeing their pseudo-family breaking apart as they seek to reunite in the post-apocalyptic zombie-filled world. Deutch plays one of the new characters, Madison, whose close relationship with Jesse Eisenberg’s Columbus adds to the dysfunction of the survivors.

Her performance as an aloof blonde made her one of the more hilarious additions to the sequel.

Her performance as an aloof blonde made her one of the more hilarious additions to the sequel. While the movie did not feel as strong as the original, additions like Deutch’s character felt new and strengthened the overall story. While there are a lot of Christmas rom-coms to enjoy every year, Something from Tiffany’s is an underrated gem in that subgenre that should not be overlooked. Zoey Deutch stars as Rachel, a young woman in a struggling relationship with her boyfriend. After a mixup at a jewelry store, she receives an engagement ring from her boyfriend that was actually bought by another man, Ethan (Kendrick Sampson). However, as Rachel and Ethan attempt to sort out the mishap, they find a spark ignited between them.

Deutch continues to cement herself as one of the best modern rom-com actors out there with a funny, sweet, and endearing performance that makes the entire audience fall in love with her. The movie takes cues from classics of the genre, like Sleepless in Seattle, but also makes its own mark on the genre with its fun story.

Not Okay (2022)

As Danni Sanders

Danni and Rowan in support group in Not Okay

Zoey Deutch once again showed off her considerable comedic talents while also proving herself unafraid of bold material. Not Okay is a satirical comedy that centers on Danni Sanders (Deutch), an aspiring influencer who lies about being on a trip to France when a terrorist attack reaches exactly where she claimed to be. With fans believing that she survived, Sanders must now find a way to resolve the issue caused by her lies.

A satire on the modern age of the internet influencer, Deutch’s performance is the highlight of the movie, thanks to her ability to make this dislikable character a profound and relatable one that captures the overall message of the story. The movie itself doesn’t live up to the committed performance that Deutch delivers, but it makes for a funny and original satire that captures the internet culture in a non-antagonizing and unredeemable way.

Buffaloed (2019)

As Peg Dahl

Zoey Deutch poses for a mugshot in Buffaloed

The comedy-drama Buffaloed is one of Hulu’s hidden gems. The movie focuses on Peg Dahl, played by Zoey Deutch, whose dreams of escaping her hometown in Buffalo are lost when she gets herself in trouble and is inundated by massive debt. She then makes the most of her situation and attempts to become a debt collector herself to rescue herself from her situation.

Throughout it all, Deutch makes Peg someone the audience can like even when her decisions are not too smart.

A commentary on the difficulty of late capitalism and accumulating wealth, Deutch’s performance is another great example of how she is able to bring charm and humor to a seemingly dark story. Deutch is able to carry the story with her performances and keep audiences invested in the story, which grows into an interesting and original crime story. Throughout it all, Deutch makes Peg someone the audience can like even when her decisions are not too smart.

The Outfit (2022)

As Mable Shaun

Zoey Deutch & Dylan O’Brien looking off screen in The Outfit

In the first of Deutch’s two releases in 2022 also starring Dylan O’Brien, Zoey Deutch plays Mabel, the receptionist of a tailor shop in 1956 Chicago that serves primarily underground criminals in The Outfit. English cutter Leonard Burling, played by Mark Rylance, is a seemingly mild-mannered operator of the shop who finds himself in the middle of a gang war when a top mobster’s son shows up at the shop looking for help.

Despite not being a box-office success, The Outfit received stellar reviews for its story and its performances, particularly that of Oscar-winner Rylance. However, Deutch holds her own on-screen with him, juxtaposing his reserved and soft-spoken performance with a charming and wide-eyed one. The Outfit’s ending shows how intricately the thriller has been constructed, making for a true hidden gem in the genre.

Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)

As Beverly

The cast of Everybody Wants Some!! posing by a car

Highly-revered director Richard Linklater of Boyhood and Before Sunrise fame returns to one of his most beloved movies with a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused. Everybody Wants Some!! centers on a group of college baseball players in the 1980s in this coming-of-age sports comedy. The movie takes place during the few days before classes begin after moving in and the various situations that they find themselves in being on their own for the first time.

Like Dazed and Confused, the movie excels with its lighthearted tone that feels like being at a party with these characters. The cast also brings the characters to life. Zoey Deutch plays the only female in the main character as Beverly, a theater student who catches the attention of baseball player Jake. Even among fellow rising stars, Glen Powell and Wyatt Russell, Deutch stands out with her quirky charm.

Set It Up (2018)

As Harper Moore

Set It Up's Charlie and Harper

Though they barely share the screen in Everybody Wants Some!!, Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell proved to have amazing chemistry in their next movie together. Set It Up sees them starring two assistants who work together to get their overly demanding bosses to fall in love with each other so that they can loosen up on them. In the process, the two start to spend more time with each other and eventually fall in love.

Before Powell found success in revitalizing the rom-com genre with Anyone But You, Set It Up felt like a welcome return to the kind of movies fans loved in a bygone era of this genre. A lot of that has to do with how effective Powell and Deutch are together, playing off each other’s comedic energy while also making the romance work. It is a sweet movie with some genuine laughs as well.
