Alex Haw – Following
Nolan’s first venture into the world of feature-length films was highly experimental, but it also provided a great deal of insight into what would become his signature style. Following is a clever and twisty film about a young writer who seeks out people with interesting stories to find inspiration for his own work. However, when he runs into a man named Cobb, his life takes some wild and unexpected turns.

Alex Haw plays Cobb, a thief and a conman who leads the young writer along dark paths. Over the course of the film, his enigmatic, energetic, and engaging personality leads to the young writer falling into less favorable situations. Haw does a great job of layering in complexity for the character, and while this remains the only acting credit to his name, his performance is the standout of the film.

Guy Pearce – Memento
Guy Pearce was already a household name by the time he appeared in Memento, and at the time, he was evidently a bigger deal than Nolan. Despite this, Pearce clearly saw the genius behind Nolan’s vision for Memento, and he worked alongside the director to deliver a movie that would establish Nolan as a promising director capable of extraordinary and innovative storytelling.
Guy Pearce plays Leonard, a man who suffers from memory loss, and finds himself stuck at the center of a major conspiracy with murder, mystery, and violence. The story does not follow a linear track, and as a result, the truth is slowly uncovered as Leonard gets further into his investigation. Pearce does a fantastic job as a character who repeatedly needs to go back to square one, with an authentic and engaging performance that deserves greater recognition than it got.

Robin Williams – Insomnia
Another trademark of Nolan’s work is his tendency to cast popular actors, who often find themselves settling into a similar set of roles, and breaking the mold. As seen in Insomnia, when Nolan cast legendary comedy actor and funny man, Robin Williams, to play a dark and twisted villain. The film is a slow burn, revealing more about each character and the underlying mystery as it progresses, but Williams is easily the standout.

Not only is this a break from tradition for Williams, but his role as Walter Finch opposite the legendary drama actor Al Pacino further enhances the overall quality and excitement of his performance. Williams has always been an incredible and intelligent figure behind the camera, but this movie really dives into how much depth and intensity the actor is able to pull off as well.

Christian Bale – Batman Begins
While Nolan’s career began with complex mystery stories, his contribution to the superhero genre is extraordinary with the incredible Dark Knight trilogy. Batman Begins kicks off the series, and it introduces the world to Christian Bale as Batman. Bale had already gained popularity due to his extraordinary work in movies like American Psycho, but this was a very different role.

As Bruce Wayne, Bale delivers a charming, determined, and nuanced performance. And on top of that, Bale dons the Batman suit and becomes a darker hero. The duality of the role, the depth of the emotions, and the fresh take on an age-old hero combine to make this not only one of the best Batman performances of all time, but a career-defining moment for Bale as well.

Hugh Jackman – The Prestige
Warner Bros. Pictures
Shortly after Batman Begins came out, Nolan made another extraordinary film that combined science fiction and mystery in one of the most compelling stories of his career, The Prestige. Leading the charge in this title was Hugh Jackman, who starred opposite Christian Bale, as a pair of competing magicians. However, the character of Robert Angier, played by Jackman, steals the show.

Angier is deeply affected by the grief of losing his wife, utterly obsessed with beating his former friend, and willing to do anything to succeed. This dangerous combination leads to some shady dealings, and a truly inspired twist in the film. However, none of this could have worked without Jackman making every moment count, and imbuing the role with emotion and depth.

Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
Back to the Batman trilogy, Nolan’s The Dark Knight is often seen as the definitive entry in the series. And in large part, that is thanks to the astonishing performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker. The Joker is a long-time rival to Batman from comics and shows, but Ledger did something that has never been done prior with the character in live-action.
Ledger’s performance elevated the character from goofy comic book villain, as they had often been portrayed previously, to a true master criminal and heartless villain. Ledger’s performance delivers anarchy, intelligence, intensity, and so much more on a level that has yet to be recreated. Undoubtedly, the Joker stole more than just money in The Dark Knight, as the character quickly became the star.
6
Leonardo DiCaprio – Inception
Warner Bros. Pictures
Inception features an impressive ensemble cast which includes several actors that Nolan would work with on multiple occasions. Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page, and Cillian Murphy all delivered outstanding performances, but there was one actor who made the movie work. Leonardo DiCaprio has been a force in Hollywood from a young age, but Inception reaffirmed why he is such a treasure in the industry.

As Cobb, a skilled dream walker who is capable of retrieving information from people’s subconscious minds, DiCaprio exudes confidence and intelligence. However, beneath the surface, he conceals turmoil and inner conflict arising from the death of his wife. Cobb is a complex character, and thanks to DiCaprio’s performance, every element of emotion, trauma, and intensity is captured in detail.
5
Tom Hardy – The Dark Knight Rises
Tom Hardy returned to work with Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises, where he would transform completely to tackle the role of Bane. It is this transformation that makes the actor unrecognizable, and ensures he is the standout element of the film. From his voice, to his physicality, Hardy embraces an entirely new persona to play the role of Bane.
While there were some quirks, and elements of this movie have been critiqued, it’s hard to argue that Hardy did not stand out. His ability to create a character and bring them to life is exceptional, and this movie solidifies just how extensive his range is. Especially after playing a hero just one Nolan film earlier.
4
Matthew McConaughey – Interstellar
Matthew MCConaughey is a national treasure. The actor is one of the most unique, enigmatic, and engaging actors appearing in TV and film today, and he brings all of that along for the ride in the extraordinary space sci-fi movie, Interstellar. As Cooper, McConaughey is the beating heart of the movie, with much of the screen time focusing on him.

McConaughey is the beating heart of the movie, with a compelling and twisty plot that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The emotion, the intensity, and the way that the story unfolds all combine in a satisfying way, with McConaughey at the center.
3
Fionn Whitehead – Dunkirk
Dunkirk is a tense historical war film that allowed Nolan an opportunity to work with a large cast of younger actors. As the film is set in the midst of World War II, the movie focuses on young soldiers who embark on a mission of vital importance to the outcome of the war. And among the talented cast, Fionn Whitehead leads the way with confidence and strength.
Whitehead plays Tommy, and while the film is lighter on dialogue for much of its runtime, Whitehead conveys emotion, determination, and strength. It’s a wonderful performance set in a film of epic scale. And despite so many other notable and big-name actors appearing throughout, the attention and focus remains squarely on Tommy as he races against the clock.
2
John David Washington – Tenet
Tenet may take the cake for Nolan’s most mind-bending movie. While many other films in his body of work feature non-linear storytelling, big twists, and unusual sci-fi elements, Tenet takes all of this to the nth degree. And leading the charge is John David Washington, who helps to keep the action and plot moving forward in a satisfying way.

Washington’s character is often positioned as being as unaware as the audience, which makes him immediately relatable, but the way that he builds the story and develops throughout the movie from an unassuming bystander to the action hero is incredible. Washington’s performance here made the movie what it is.
1
Cillian Murphy – Oppenheimer
Finally, Oppenheimer saw Nolan tackle a historical biopic of one of the most controversial figures in modern history. And while the story is tense, emotional, and fast-paced, it’s the performance of Cillian Murphy that takes it to the next level. Murphy is captivating, energetic, and exceptional in his ability to capture the life and idiosyncrasies of Oppenheimer, while also pushing the story forward.
It makes perfect sense that this is the movie that won Murphy an Oscar, because it is a truly outstanding performance that brings a controversial figure to life in a way that is not necessarily all positive or negative, but simply honest and authentic. It just goes to show the quality of performances that Christopher Nolan has been able to get from his actors in each film he directs.
