The Cave Game Walkthrough, Guide, Gameplay, and More

The Cave Game

“The Cave, developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Sega in 2013, is a puzzle-platform adventure game available on various platforms, including PlayStation Network, Nintendo eShop, Xbox Live Arcade, Steam for Windows, OS X, and Linux. It was later released on iOS, Android, and Ouya. The game revolves around a cave that lures people in to explore their darker personality traits.

Players choose three characters from a cast of seven, each with unique abilities, to explore the cave and solve puzzles. Some puzzles require teamwork, making multiple play-throughs necessary to fully explore the cave. Initially delisted from console storefronts in 2018, the game became a Steam exclusive until 2023. Subsequently, the rights returned to Double Fine Productions, leading to its release on Xbox Game Pass and GOG.com on July 18, 2023.”

The Cave Game Walkthrough

Common Areas

Introduction

The game’s intro section acquaints players with seven diverse characters and requires them to choose three for their journey. Each character possesses unique abilities, influencing the game experience. After hearing their backstories and hopes for the cave, players pick a character and proceed to the right. They can interact with objects, such as picking up a crowbar, and clear the path with the help of other characters.

Heading left, players get accustomed to various controls like action/interaction, powers, jump, and dropping items. After passing a barricade, they select a second party member and then a third. At a large ledge, all three characters are needed to break a bridge, leading to a fall into a pond near the gift shop, as humorously suggested by the narrator.

The Mine

“The Mine” is a level in the game with various challenges that players must compete with any character. After pulling two levers, a rock is dropped into a spike pit, serving as a platform for the characters. They meet an angry Miner, whose carts were trapped due to their actions. The Miner provides items like a shovel, bucket, and dynamite to help them.

There are two trophies/achievements: “Fire in the Hole” requires all party members to be killed by one stick of dynamite, and “Creamed Corn” involves destroying the first can of corn using dynamite.

To progress, players catch dynamite in the water bucket, creating a bucket full of dynamite. They use this dynamite to blow up rocks in the Gold Cart section and fill the cart with gold.

The Food Cart section involves using platforms that move up and down based on weight to get the cart across three levels. There is also a cave painting in this area.

Finally, in the last section, players encounter the third and final cart. To send it to the Miner, they need to use a character with a shovel and switch positions at the right moment. Once the Miner has all three carts, the bridge breaks, and the players move to the next area.

Zoo

“Zoo” is a section of a video game called “The Cave.” It is the second “Common Area” within the game and can be encountered with different combinations of characters. To progress, players must navigate through various puzzles and tasks.

Here is a step-by-step summary of how to progress through the Zoo area:

  1. Enter the Zoo area by heading left until one of the characters is eaten by the Crystal Cave Monster.

  2. Continue descending into the Zoo until a cutscene with the Monster Hunter is triggered.

  3. After the cutscene, pick up the Tape Recorder without batteries; it will be needed for the “To Soothe A Savage Beast” achievement.

  4. Proceed left until the Crystal Cave Monster appears again. Drop the tape recorder before getting too close to the monster. It will grab the character and spit them out on the other side.

  5. Climb the only ladder in the room and push the metal box off to the right and then to the left until it falls to ground level. Ensure no party members are below the box when it falls.

  6. Climb up the box, run past the lever, and hop onto a ledge to grab the Cave Painting.

  7. Keep heading left and down to find the Cave’s previous explorers: a Pirate, a Robot, and a Clown. Pry out the dead battery from the Robot, as it will be needed for the tape recorder.

  8. Optional Easter Egg: Honk the Clown’s nose around 15 times to see his name change.

  9. Head back to the chamber where the party members were first spit into. Switch to the character without the battery and pull the lever there to keep the hole open.

  10. Use the third character (if necessary) to get through the barred door in the lower chamber.

  11. Climb back up with the battery to the top of the zoo, where a fish tank full of electric eels is located. Jump into the tank to charge the dead battery.

  12. Swim through the tank to find another Cave Painting on the other side.

  13. Return to where the Tape Recorder was left and put the charged battery inside.

  14. To unlock the “To Soothe A Savage Beast” achievement, take the tape recorder with the charged battery to the Food Court just outside where the Monster Hunter is. Drop the tape recorder to record Elevator Music, then bring it back near the Crystal Cave Monster. The music should play, and the achievement will unlock.

  15. Record the sounds of the monster with the tape recorder and take it to where the Hunter has her camp set up. Set the recorder down to lure the Hunter away.

  16. With the Hunter gone, grab a hotdog from the vending machine and lead the Crystal Cave Monster to the bridge on the right.

  17. After a cutscene, the rest of the party will catch up, and players can continue deeper into the Cave.

Optional Area Shortcuts:

  • Players can skip the Zoo area by holding onto a hotdog from the vending machine since the Crystal Cave Monster will eat the character that enters the area first. Use the hotdog to lead the monster to the bridge.
  • Another shortcut involves using The Knight character’s shield ability to protect themselves from the Monster Hunter’s bullets. Then, grab a hotdog from the vending machine and use it to lead the monster to the bridge.

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop serves as the entrance area to a cave in the game. It’s encountered in all playthroughs and offers various puzzles to be solved. The player interacts with the gift shop clerk to exchange three trinkets for entrance to the cave.

To progress, the player must use different characters to pull levers, solve puzzles, and collect items like an oversized Novelty Key, a crowbar, dynamite, and souvenir trinkets. They also find Cave Paintings that provide background information on characters.

To access the cave, the player must use the trinkets and complete a pressure plate puzzle. After solving several challenges, they eventually reach an elevator, return the trinkets to the gift shop clerk, and enter the cave. There are optional achievements/trophies available, such as Shoplifting (taking a postcard from the gift shop) and Remorse (returning the stolen postcard later in the game).

Along the way, the player encounters monsters and explores different areas of the cave. The game features various characters, each with unique abilities used to progress through the challenges.

Character Specific Areas

Mansion – The Twins

Playing through The Cave with the Twins leads to the Twins House, a creepy puzzle-filled location. To access the attic, find the umbrella near the exit and use it to open the attic latch. Obtain a fuse from the attic and place it in the fuse slot in a room downstairs to activate the dumbwaiter.

Get a hammer from the kitchen, go back to the attic, and break a loose floorboard to create a smooth surface. Push the box of china from the attic to the kitchen, then use the dumbwaiter to reach the second level. Fill an empty chamber pot with water, go back down, and push the box in front of the dumbwaiter to reach the third floor. Move the box to jump out of an open window, climb the roof, and extinguish a fire using the chamber pot.

Use a skeleton key from the attic to open the basement door and find dog food. Feed the dog in the kitchen and retrieve a bone from a character near the levers. Take the bone under the house to the sleeping guard dog. Turn off the basement steam using a valve under the house. Then, take the Twins to the basement, obtain rat poison, and poison the soup while distracting the dog with the bone. The Twins’ parents will die, allowing the use of the key on the exit door.

Castle – The Knight

In this adventure, the Castle serves as the Knight’s stage, accessible only when he is part of your three-person party. To progress, head left until you encounter a narrow pit of fire with a cave tours sign. Use the Knight’s invincibility power midair to descend through the flames unharmed. Continue left to meet the King, who demands you earn his daughter’s amulet before attempting to remove Excalibur.

After talking to the King, a gate opens to the right, leading to the princess’s tower. Climb the rope near the tree to reach the princess. She explains that you must retrieve the dragon’s treasure to win her amulet. With the princess’ door now open to you, return down and head right, following the princess sign.

Climb the tower, avoiding guards that can kill you if you get too close. Use a character to control a lever, moving the Knight to a lower level where you find another Cave Painting. If you have the time traveller in your party, use her power to get an item (key) above the guard.

With the painting and key, activate the Knight’s invincibility power again to distract the guard, allowing another character to obtain the key. Use this key to open the large gate, but don’t take the treasure. Instead, send the Knight down the path below the dragon’s chamber to find another Cave Painting.

Proceed to the opposite side of the dragon’s chamber, engage the Knight’s invincibility power to distract the dragon, and grab the dragon’s treasure. Go up to the princess’ room, where you use the treasure as a token in the coin slot. Unfortunately, the dragon ends up eating the princess, leaving her amulet behind for the Knight to retrieve.

Take control of the Knight, go left, and head towards the tower. You will pass through a tunnel with an alternate “skull” path leading left. Grab the amulet and return to the King. Despite your efforts, you can’t remove Excalibur until you use dynamite found in the tower’s skull path.

Light the fuse, place the dynamite under the Excalibur rubble, and the Knight can finally pull the sword from the stone. The King departs to see his now-deceased daughter. Additionally, there’s a Trophy Hint called “Royal Buffet” that involves revisiting the princess’ room to find a similar fate for the King.

With the Knight’s chapter complete, continue left and jump off the cliff to proceed further in the adventure.

Carnival  –  The Hillbilly

“Carnival” is a level specific to the character called The Hillbilly. The player must navigate through various games and attractions to impress the hillbilly’s crush, the two-legged lady. The objective is to obtain a teddy bear for her by earning tickets from different games around the carnival.

To start, the player must get the first ticket by returning it to the deposit machine held by a boy. They can then collect the second ticket by using a dunking machine and swimming around to find a Cave Painting. The player should note the locations of games and attractions while exploring the carnival.

The player needs to solve puzzles and use different characters’ abilities to progress. For instance, using a wrench to interact with a generator truck, obtaining a fuse, and placing it in a fuse box. The player will also use items like a sledgehammer and an invisible barbell to earn more tickets.

To get the last ticket, the player must remember the color that Xavetar glows and choose it on the “Wheel of Misfortune.” There are also hints for earning certain achievements, such as gathering characters with specific items for a trophy.

Once all the tickets are collected, the player returns to the hillbilly’s crush with the teddy bear. The story concludes with the hillbilly seeking vengeance on the ordinary strength man who has taken his favorite lady. The player ignites the carnival using a lighter, causing the hay to topple, and then proceeds to complete the level.

Please note that this summary provides an overview of the tasks and actions involved in the “Carnival” level of the game, but it doesn’t include the specific game mechanics or interactions in detail.

Pyramind – The Adventurer

The Pyramid is an area accessible only with the Adventurer in your party. Start by using the Adventurer’s grapple ability to cross the spike pit and get your teammates across. There’s a cave painting on the way up.

Scale the pyramid from the outside and trigger a cutscene by using the grapple ability again. Discover the Ankh needed to open the door to the Sarcophagus room. Solve puzzles with animal buttons to progress.

In the Sarcophagus room, match animal buttons or use teammates to open doors. Reach the top ledge by using specific buttons and slowing down spikes. Guide the Adventurer through spike traps to reach the Sarcophagus.

Once the Sarcophagus is obtained, push it on an elevator plate and navigate through different levels while triggering floor plates. Later, free trapped teammates using torches and plates. Reunite the party and leave the Pyramid behind.

Monastery – The Monk

In “Monastery,” a level within the game “The Cave,” the player takes on the Monk’s Quest to become the master of a temple. The player must go up a rocky mountainside and use telekinesis to move support beams, granting access to the temple. The Monk’s master gives the player a feather. The next challenge involves handling lotus blossoms by using telekinesis to close a window at the right moment. After passing this trial, the player faces the Balancing Monk Puzzle.

In the subsequent part, the player encounters magic carpets and must avoid any movement to prevent characters from falling. To proceed, the player breaks a second bridge using the feather to access more cave paintings and earn an achievement.

The final stage involves utilizing telekinesis to manipulate objects, such as a support bolt and a support beam, to become the master of Zenness. By completing these tasks, the player can open the Master’s Gate, concluding the Monk’s quest in The Cave.

Museum -The Time Traveler

The article titled “MuseumMuseum” describes a time-traveling adventure in a future museum. The main objective is to find a button that enables access to the dinosaur exhibit. Upon entering the exhibit, players need to press specific buttons to experience a smelly, dinosaur-like sensation. The next step involves going to a time machine and selecting the past as the destination.

In the past, players encounter a cave with falling brown liquid and a dinosaur’s fossil. They must position the fossil to block the liquid, allowing the rest of the players to access the time machine. The article then suggests a strategy involving two players: one player goes to the past and retrieves a rock made by a man, while the other player interacts with the dinosaur, making it fall in love with them. Lastly, the article recommends using the rock to quickly kill the dinosaur.

Lab –  The Scientist

“The Scientist’s Quest in The Cave involves launching a nuclear missile and eliminating other scientists. To access the launch area, you must first hack a console to unlock a door. Then, proceed to the right, where you’ll find a grog machine. Hack the machine with the scientist to enter a new area.

To retrieve the First Launch Key, take an elevator up and swim across a pond to find a fuse box. Grab the fuse, return across the pond, and insert the fuse into an empty box, which opens another elevator.

After taking this elevator up, climb a ladder and hack a console with the Scientist to open a blast door. In the adjacent room, avoid a moving laser and hack a console while the laser moves away to kill the scientist holding the first launch key. Take the key to the left room and insert it into one of the keyholes.

For the Second Launch Key, leave a character in the room where the scientist died. Hack the console next to the elevator with the Scientist to activate it and then descend to the third level marked ‘3’. Find a wet floor sign nearby and place it by the warhead console on the first level. Hack the console to lure the scientist who will slip on the wet floor sign and drop the second key. Take this key back to the key room.

Obtaining the Third Launch Key is more challenging. Position one character on the top floor next to the administrative console, another character on the second floor next to the bulletin board, and the third character on the bottom floor in the kitchen.

Coordinate their efforts to find out the daily food special, cross-reference the day in the break room, and use the top floor character to figure out the password. Enter the code on the third floor to unlock the knockout gas room. Take the knockout gas to the second floor and release it near the vent to knock out a threatening guard, who will drop the third key.

Lastly, to complete the quest, insert a navigator. On the bottom third floor, find bananas in the cafeteria and feed them to the chimp. The chimp will follow you, so lead it to a pod on the second floor. Then, head to the top floor, where all three characters turn the keys simultaneously to launch the nuclear rocket. The rocket clears your path, and you have now finished the scientist’s level in the cave.”

The Cave Gameplay

“The Cave is a story-driven game centered around a talking magical cave with complex tunnels. Seven characters from different time periods and backgrounds are drawn to the Cave, seeking self-discovery and understanding of their potential. Each character has dark secrets.

Players start by choosing three characters to explore the Cave, and their selection remains fixed throughout the game. The characters include archetypes like a hillbilly, twins (treated as one character), and a scientist.

As players control the trio, they collect objects and interact with the environment to solve puzzles, similar to adventure games. The exploration combines 2D platformer elements with 3D graphics, and it unfolds in a “Metroidvania”-like style, where collecting objects grants access to new areas.

To progress, players must utilize each character’s unique abilities, switching between them strategically. Some areas are exclusive to specific characters, representing their desires and dark traits that led them to the Cave.

Though hazards can be fatal to a character, respawning nearby allows players to retry challenges. Throughout the game, players encounter iconographs that unveil the characters’ backstories and motivations.

The game primarily offers a single-player experience, but cooperative play for up to three players is possible on the same device, with each controlling one of the chosen characters.”
