As Aaron delves deeper into the case, suspicions arise among the townspeople and a complex web of secrets is uncovered. Aaron initially suspects Luke’s ex-girlfriend Gretchen, but later discovers that the school where Luke’s wife Karen works has financial problems. Through meticulous investigation, he discovers that the school’s principal, Scott Whitlam, has embezzled school funds to pay off gambling debts. Scott murdered Karen and her family to cover up his actions.
The climax is a standoff between Aaron, local police officer Greg Laco, and Scott Whitlam, who is threatening to set himself on fire. Aaron and Laco intervene to prevent this potential disaster. As the truth comes out, Aaron is hailed as a hero for stopping Scott’s dangerous behavior.
However, the film takes a poignant turn when Aaron discovers Ellie’s hidden bag in the jungle. Inside the bag, he finds Ellie’s diary, which reveals that she intended to escape from her abusive father, Mal Deacon. Tragically, Mal pushed Ellie into the river, causing her death. Aaron leaves the town with Ellie’s memory in his arms, walking along the dry riverbed.
The film deftly weaves together multiple subplots to create a compelling story that explores Luke’s murder and Ellie’s tragic death. With outstanding performances, especially from Eric Bana, and vivid descriptions of the drought-stricken town, Drought delivers a gripping, emotionally resonant finale.

Drought tells the story of federal agent Aaron Falk who returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of his childhood friend Luke Hudler, who was accused of killing his wife and son before committing suicide, leaving only his young daughter alive. Haunted by the past, Falk reluctantly agrees to investigate the crime.
Flashbacks reveal Fogg’s troubled past in the town, where he was suspected of being the murderer of his girlfriend Ellie. Faced with the dissatisfaction of the townspeople, Fogg teamed up with local police officer Greg Laco to investigate Luke’s death. They discovered some inconsistencies, such as the use of different shotgun bullets.

Clues lead Falk to suspect that Ellie’s cousin Grant may be interested in buying the Hadler family farm. Through interviews and discoveries, Falk uncovers a series of secrets, including an affair between Luke and Karen’s colleague Gretchen. Falk pieces together the mystery and discovers financial problems and the scandal of the school principal Whitlam embezzling public funds.
The investigation intensified, culminating in a confrontation with Whitlam, who admitted the murder was intended to cover up his fraud. In a dramatic scene, Whitlam attempted to set himself on fire, but Falk and Laco stopped him in time, being injured in the process.
After the case is closed and Falk clears Luke of the crime, the film ends with the revelation of Ellie’s tragic past. Falk finds Ellie’s diary, revealing the horrific abuse she suffered and the murder of her father. The story ends with Falk saying goodbye to Ellie and leaving along the dry riverbed with the evidence that cleared her name. The film weaves a story of mystery, redemption, and facing the ghosts of the past.
