Woman, her son Zeb, and her husband R initially seek shelter in R’s home, but tragedy strikes when R’s mother dies in an accident while scavenging for supplies, and his father commits suicide shortly afterwards.

After facing these losses, the woman and Zeb find refuge in a commune led by a woman who encourages people to live a new sustainable lifestyle. The woman befriends another young mother named O. However, the woman has a hard time letting go of her past life, as shown in flashbacks, where her romance with R originates. She is reprimanded by the commune leader for listening to the radio, which reports on improving living conditions across Britain.

Despite forming a close bond with O, after much deliberation, the woman decides to leave the commune. She sets out to find a way back to London, stealing a car that has been left behind by a couple. London, while still severely flooded, is no longer completely uninhabitable. The woman returns to her damaged house and is eventually reunited with R.

The decision to leave the commune is crucial to the film’s narrative. This decision is revealed through a conversation with a mysterious man, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who emphasizes the importance of not shutting yourself off from reality and forgetting the past.
