The Squid and the Whale ending explained

In meetings with a psychologist, Walter begins to understand things independent of his father’s perspective. The psychologist asked Walter to remember a happy memory. At first, Walter wasn’t sure, but eventually, he shared a memory from his childhood, when his mother often took him to see the large squid and whale exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History.

He admitted that the exhibit scared him, so he would peek at it through his fingers. However, when they get home, they talk about what they saw, and gradually the exhibit becomes less scary. Walter suddenly realized that his father was never really around him, and it was his mother who really cared about him.

After a heated argument between Bernard and Joan over who would have custody of Walter and the possibility of Joan taking him back, Bernard collapsed on the street outside their home and was taken to the hospital. At that critical moment, Bernard asked Walter to stay with him, but Walter decided to run to the Museum of Natural History instead. The film ends with Walter standing in front of the exhibit again, but this time, he can look directly at it without fear.

Plot summary of The Squid and the Whale·······

The Squid and the Whale is a deeply personal, semi-autobiographical film that delves into the lives of two teenage brothers, Walter and Frank, as they navigate the challenging circumstances of their parents’ divorce in 1986. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Brooklyn, New York, their father, Bernard, is a selfish and arrogant writer who is involved in an extramarital affair with a graduate student.

In contrast, their mother, Joan, a talented writer in her own right, struggled to find her identity after the breakdown of her marriage. The film closely follows the boys as they cope with the changing dynamics of their family, confront their own personal relationships, and try to understand the profound impact of divorce on their lives. It skillfully captures the emotional ripples of a family experiencing separation and poignantly reveals the complexities of human relationships.
