In 2023, Sumo Digital partnered with Gun Interactive to launch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a survival horror video game in the form of an asymmetrical game. This interactive experience is inspired by the iconic 1974 film of the same name.

The game’s objectives revolve around the quest for survival, as four victims struggle to escape the ruthless control of three members of the notorious Sawyer family. These are hostile family members bent on capturing and ultimately ending the lives of these victims.

The game’s cast includes Kane Hodder, who will reprise his role as Leatherface, a character he previously played in Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III . Additionally, Edwin Neal voices “The Hitchhiker,” echoing his performance in the original 1974 film.

When starting a match, players can choose to take on the role of a family member or a victim. Each game can accommodate up to seven players, with a choice of three family members and four victims. The game features three different race maps: the Sawyer family house, the gas station, and the slaughterhouse.

While the family home and gas station are locations directly inspired by the film, the slaughterhouse is a newly introduced location. Each map has day and night variations that affect the lighting and overall atmosphere. Each map contains a basement where both the victim and Leatherface begin the match.

For the victim, the initial goal is to break free, get out of the basement, and find various means of escape. There are four exit points on each map. Instead, family members are tasked with tracking down and eliminating the victims. If the victim takes enough damage, they are immediately eliminated from the match.

To further complicate the victim’s situation, the family must also tend to the needs of Grandpa, a regular character who feeds off the victim’s blood and blood bags scattered across the map. When the victim makes enough noise, Grandpa will become more active and occasionally emit tell-tale screams, exposing the victim’s activities to all family members. The game ends when all victims have managed to escape or have been hunted down and eliminated.

As players compete in matches, they accrue experience points that can be used to allocate skill points within each character’s unique skill tree. By progressing through the skill tree, players can unlock additional skills and attributes, allowing them to customize their character to fit specific playstyles and strategies.
