Top 10 Coal Producing States in India

Coal remains the backbone of India’s energy sector and has made a huge contribution to India’s industrial development and power generation. Despite efforts around the world to shift to renewable energy, coal remains the primary energy source in India’s energy portfolio due to its cost-effectiveness and huge reserves.

Coal production trends in India

Coal production in India has grown steadily. As of September 2024, the country produced 4.1162 billion tons (MT), an increase of 5.85% over the same period in 2023. During this period, Coal India Limited (CIL), the largest coal producer, provided 311 MT during this period, with a growth rate of 2.80%. Coal dispatch also reached 442.24 tons, an increase of 4.97% from last year.

By 2024-25, the government will target domestic coal production at 1 billion tons each year for better mechanization, better infrastructure and policy actions

Leading coal producers

  1. Jharkand

    Jharkhand has reached 83.15 billion tonnes with a share of 26.4% of India’s total coal reserves. Its famous coal fields, such as Dhanbad and Bokaro, are crucial to industrial energy demand.

  2. Odisha

    Odisha holds 793 billion tons of coal reserves (25.1%). Talcher and IB Valley Coalfields became key factors in India’s energy sector.

  3. chhattisgarh

    Chhattisgarh’s Korba, Raigarh and Surguja Coalfields have a reserve of 57 billion tons (18.1%) and are growing rapidly.

  4. West Bengal

    West Bengal has 3.87 billion tons of reserves (10.8%). The historic Raniganj Coalfield is at the heart of its production.

  5. Madhya Pradesh

    Madhya Pradesh has 30.92 billion tons of reserves (9.8%). Its Singrauli coalfield powers the main hot plants.

  6. Telangana

    Telangana contributed 23.03 billion tons (7.3%), mainly from Godavari Valley Coalfield.

  7. Maharashtra

    Maharashtra holds 13.22 billion tons (4.2%), with Chandrapur and Wardha Valley Coalfields producing in mass production.

  8. Bihar

    Bihar has 4.44 billion tons of reserves (1.4%), including part of the Jariya coalfield.

  9. Andhra Pradesh

    Andhra Pradesh contributed 4.14 billion tons (1.3%) and had a distinct reserve in Singaporeni.

  10. Uttar Pradesh

    Uttar Pradesh ranked first with 1.06 billion tonnes (0.3%), sharing Singrauli Coalfield with Madhya Pradesh.

Jharkhand continues to lead India’s largest coal producer, followed by Odisha and Chhattisgarh to ensure that the country’s energy needs are effectively met. With the continued development of mining technology and infrastructure, these states will further enhance their contribution to India’s energy sector in the coming years.
