UB40

UB40 are a popular British reggae and pop band formed in Birmingham in December 1978. Over the years they have had over 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart and have achieved huge global success, with over 70 million record sales worldwide.

The band’s original line-up was multi-ethnic, including members from English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish and Yemeni backgrounds. Their hit singles “Food for Thought”, “Red Red Wine” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love” all topped the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

UB40’s most successful albums, Labour of Love (1983) and Promises and Lies (1993), both topped the UK Albums Chart. They share the record with Madness for the longest stint on the UK Singles Chart in the 1980s.

The band’s lineup remained stable for nearly 29 years until lead singer Ali Campbell left in 2008, followed by keyboardist Mickey Virtue. Despite the changes, UB40 continued to exist, and the band’s name caused legal issues in 2014. In 2021, Matt Doyle became the new lead singer after Duncan Campbell retired due to poor health. UB40’s enduring success and ever-evolving lineup demonstrate their lasting impact on the music industry.
