India has 43 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 35 of which are designated as sites of cultural importance, 7 are known for their natural beauty and one – Khangchendzonga National Park – is famous for its natural beauty. Worldwide, only five countries have more World Heritage sites than India, which established its international reputation in 1983 with the Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, the fortified Agra Fort and the iconic Taj Mahal were among the first countries to be inscribed on the coveted World Heritage List. On July 26, 2024, at the 46th World Heritage Committee meeting held in New Delhi, Assam’s “Moidams-Mound Tomb System of the Ahom Dynasty” was officially included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This prestigious recognition marks India’s 43rd UNESCO World Heritage Site.
