Vande Bharat sleeper trains will revolutionize long-distance rail travel in India, bringing comfort, speed and cutting-edge technology to night travel. Manufactured by BEML and Railway Coach Factory (RCF), these sleeper versions will expand the existing Vande Bharat Express network, which currently operates as chair-car service.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Route and Travel Time

Initially, the Vande Bharat sleeper train will connect New Delhi and Srinagar, marking a milestone in connecting the national capital to Jammu and Kashmir. The train is expected to start running in January 2025.

The route is about 800 kilometers long and aims to significantly shorten the journey time, with the journey expected to be completed in about 13 hours. Future routes are expected, including potential expansion in high-demand corridors such as Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai.

Vande Bharat Features and Bus Design

Vande Bharat sleeper cars come with:

  • Regenerative braking recovers energy during braking, improving fuel efficiency and reducing the train’s carbon footprint.
  • Under-slung propulsion delivers a quieter, lighter touring experience.
  • Automatic Train Protection (ATP) ensures safety through a system that monitors speed, distance and track conditions.
  • Modern facilities: Each coach is equipped with automatic doors, bio-vacuum toilets, Wi-Fi, GPS-based passenger information system, individual charging points, reading lights and sliding doors for privacy.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Seats and Accommodation

Vande Bharat sleeper coaches will be divided into three classes: AC Class 1, AC Class 2 and AC Class 3. Each train has 16 coaches with a total capacity of 1,128 passengers, including 11 AC Class 3 coaches, 4 AC Class 2 coaches and 1 First Class coach.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Fare

While official prices are yet to be confirmed, fares are expected to be competitive with other premium trains like Rajdhani and Duronto Express, estimates suggest:

  • AC 3-tier: Approximately Rs 2,000.
  • AC 2nd floor: Approximately Rs 2,500.
  • AC First Class: Approximately Rs 3,000.
  • Dynamic pricing may apply, with discounts available for early booking or off-peak travel
