Veer Baal Diwas 2024: History, Theme, and Celebrations

Veer Bal Diwas is observed every year on December 26, India’s national day of remembrance, to commemorate the extraordinary bravery and martyrdom of the younger sons of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The celebrations pay special attention to Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, who displayed extraordinary courage against all odds during the Mughal rule.

history

The festival of Veer Bal Diwas dates back to December 26, 1705, when both young Sahibzada were detained by the Mughal troops led by Wazir Khan. Aged nine and six respectively, they faced intense pressure to renounce their faith and convert to Islam; however, the two children refused to compromise on their beliefs. Their unyielding stance led to their brutal executions. They were bricked to death as punishment for their defiance. This powerful act of martyrdom is a reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of faith and justice.

As we welcome Veer Bal Diwas 2024 on December 26, it is necessary to reflect on the legacy of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh. Their story is not just that of martyrs, but a beacon of hope that encourages all – especially young people – to stand up for their beliefs with courage and integrity. This day reminds everyone that even in the face of overwhelming odds, people can choose to be brave rather than surrender. Through celebrations and educational activities around Veer Bal Diwas, India succeeds in remembering its past and inspiring future generations to inherit these valuable lessons.
