War Armor

Warframe is a free online game where players control ancient warriors called Tenno. These warriors awaken in the future, using powerful suits called Warframes as well as different weapons and abilities to fight various factions in the galaxy of origin. The game offers a combination of procedurally generated missions, open world areas, and story-specific missions.

Players can enhance their Tenno with better gear, engaging in player versus environment and player versus player elements. The game was originally conceived as “Dark Sector” in 2000, experiencing delays and changes before becoming Warframe in 2012. Despite a slow start, it gained popularity with aggressive growth, becoming one of Digital Extremes’ most successful games, with nearly 50 million registered players by 2019.

Warframe development

Warframe was developed out of Digital Extremes’ early project Dark Sector, which faced challenges and ultimately deviated from its original vision. In 2011, Digital Extremes revisited the 2004 Dark Sector concept in order to secure a contract, following the growing trend of free-to-play games.

They quickly prototyped Warframe in two months, but faced skepticism from publishers who were hesitant about the science-fiction setting and player-versus-environment gameplay. Despite these challenges, Digital Extremes decided to self-publish Warframe and produced the game under the working title “Lotus” in about nine months. This marked a departure from the studio’s previous work-for-hire model. The development of Warframe reflects the studio’s resilience and adaptability, growing from an abandoned concept into a successful free-to-play game with its unique blend of cooperative gameplay and sci-fi elements.

Warframe Gameplay

In Warframe gameplay, players take on the role of a silent Warframe, a powerful combat unit exploring the vast galaxy of Origin. Guided by an AI named Ordis, players can also control the real protagonist “Operator”, unlocking unique abilities and the ability to transfer to larger mechanical units called Necramech. Space combat powered by Archwings adds a dynamic element to missions.

Co-operative gameplay is at the core, with up to four players navigating randomly generated maps to complete different objectives, from defeating enemies to covertly stealing data. After successfully completing a mission, the game rewards players with in-game items and currency. Through the experience gained, you can upgrade equipment and Warframe to customize modules and enhance attributes and abilities. Warframe maintains a free-to-play model, eschews pay-to-win elements, and emphasizes acquiring necessary items through gameplay, offering in-game currency or microtransactions to enhance cosmetics.
