Why did Eleanor Bishop leave NCIS?
Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop, played by Emily Wickersham, leaves NCIS after seven successful seasons . Although no official reason for exiting was given, Wickersham chose to leave the show on his own terms rather than be canceled by the writers or producers.
In May 2021, Wickersham announced her exit on Instagram, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to be on the show where she could perform, laugh, and learn with great people. She thanked CBS and NCIS for including her in television history. The CBS network’s official Instagram account posted a heartfelt comment acknowledging Wickersham’s contributions to the show.
Notably, two months after quitting, Wickersham revealed on Instagram that she was pregnant with her first child. This may have been a reason why she decided to leave the show at the end of Season 18.
As for the character of Eleanor Bishop, her departure from NCIS was built into the storyline. In the season 18 finale, “Rule of 91,” it was revealed that Bishop leaked a classified NSA document. However, it was later discovered that her CIA mentor Odette Malone (Ilan J. Taylor) had deliberately planted the document as part of Bishop’s undercover mission.
As a result, Bishop was fired from NCIS. The ambiguity of the storyline leaves room for the possibility of her returning in the future, although neither CBS nor Wickersham have made any official statements regarding a potential return.
Eleanor Bishop’s departure from NCIS isn’t her only exit from the show over the years. Mark Harmon, who played special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, left the show in August 2022 after season 19. Maria Bello, who played forensic psychologist Jack Sloane, also left with Wickersham in season 18.
