Why did Elsa die in 1883?
Elsa Dutton’s death in 1883 was the result of the complex historical background and conflicts depicted in the play. The play depicts America’s westward expansion in the late 19th century, a period marked by the displacement and violence against Native American communities by white settlers.
In the world of 1883, Lakota warriors were defending their land and people from the encroachments and brutality of white settlers. The circumstances of Elsa’s death highlight the consequences of larger historical events and systemic violence that led to the genocide of Native Americans.
The Louisiana Purchase, which gave white settlers legal preemption to seize Native lands by any means necessary, including displacement and massacre, played an important role in shaping the narrative. The Dutton family, to which Elsa belongs, represents the settlers who arrived during the Westward Expansion.
Elsa’s death was a tragic result of conflict and tension between Lakota warriors and white settlers. It serves as a poignant reminder of the historical realities and dark history of white America, which the series aims to confront and address. Elsa’s fate is emblematic of the show’s profound social commentary and thematic exploration of disturbing yet important aspects of American history.
Additionally, Elsa’s death has important implications for Yellowstone more broadly. Not only does it foreshadow the tense relationship between the Dutton family and the Brocken Rock Indian Reservation in Yellowstone, but it also gives us insight into the Dutton family’s connection to Paradise Valley.
Elsa’s sacrifice and her eventual death contribute to the overarching themes and narrative of 1883 onward, emphasizing the intricate interplay between historical events, social commentary, and character development in Sheridan’s new Western universe.
