What Shows are Not Available on Netflix With Ads? A Complete List

Why are some shows unavailable on Netflix with ads?

Netflix has launched a new subscription plan called Netflix Basic with Ads, which is cheaper but comes with certain restrictions. Due to licensing restrictions, 5 to 10 percent of TV shows and movies on regular plans are not available on this new tier. Some popular shows and movies not included in this plan are also unavailable.

Netflix COO Greg Peters mentioned that they intend to work to reduce these restrictions over time. In addition to limited content, the ad-supported plan also lacks the ability to download titles for offline viewing. However, like the regular basic plan, subscribers can still stream content on one device at a time with video quality up to 720p HD.

Netflix ends ‘basic’ ad-free plan in US and UK

Netflix has decided to kill its $9.99 ad-free “Basic” plan in the US and UK, leaving just three options for new subscribers: the $6.99 “Standard” plan with ads, the $15.49 “Standard” plan and the $19.99 ’s “Premium” package plan, both of which are ad-free.

Current subscribers of the Basic plan can continue to use it, but this option will no longer be available to new or returning subscribers. The move is expected to push new users to opt for either the ad-supported plan or the standard plan, with the latter costing more than twice as much as the ad-supported option.

According to Netflix executives, the ad tier already generates higher revenue per subscriber compared to the standard tier. The company remains neutral on which tier users choose, but eliminating the Basic plan could steer new subscribers toward the ad-supported or Standard plans.

The “Basic With Ads” ad tier, launched last year, has amassed nearly 5 million monthly active users, the company reported in an early ad demo. Although active users and subscribers are different metrics, this shows growing interest in ad-supported products.

Netflix also revealed that engagement levels for ad-based plans are similar to its ad-free plans, suggesting that users are spending a lot of time on the service, which could lead to increased ad revenue.

The U.S. decision to cancel the basic plan follows a similar move by Canada a month ago. Netflix is scheduled to report earnings after the market close that day.
