Call the Midwife plot
Call the Midwife chronicles the experiences of newly qualified midwife Jenny Lee and her colleagues at Nonnatus House, a nursing convent in the impoverished London district of Poplar, during the 1950s and 1960s.
The series delves into the challenges midwives and nuns face as they navigate the medical and social complexities of their community. With 80 to 100 babies born each month in Poplar town alone, a major focus is ensuring safe childbirth for women in the area and caring for their newborns.
Call the Midwife covers a wide range of medical issues and social themes in each season. From the “baby boom” and post-war immigration to the introduction of medical advances such as gas and air pain relief, the show sheds light on the state of healthcare at the time. It covers topics such as tuberculosis outbreaks, cystic fibrosis, polio, and the impact of thalidomide and the birth control pill.
In addition, the series not only covers medical cases, but also delves into social issues such as poverty, domestic violence, racism and LGBTQ+ rights. Special episodes, including a Christmas special, expand the story beyond Poplar to showcase overseas missionary activities and the work of the mission’s orphanage.
Weaving together moving stories of birth and life with the harsh realities of the time, Call the Midwife offers an insightful and compelling portrait of midwifery and community nursing.
