What is the Z-Morh Tunnel?

The Z-Morh Tunnel is a 6.5 km long tunnel that will help maintain uninterrupted connectivity between Srinagar and Kargil during winters. It is being constructed from Gagangair in Kashmir and will be connected to Sonamarg.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is located at an altitude of 8,652 feet and is jointly developed by National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) and APCO Infratech Pvt Ltd.

The tunnel will provide much-needed security against avalanches and heavy snowfall that shut down the road for about seven months, resulting in loss of connectivity between Kashmir and Sonamarg.

Why create the Z-Morh Tunnel?

The current road condition is not conducive for traffic and communication between Kashmir and Sonamarg, resulting in road closure for 7 months every year. Road closures have economic and strategic implications.

The Z-Morh Tunnel will bring the following benefits
