Which Independence Day 2024? Is it 77th or 78th this year? Check Here

Every year on August 15, India celebrates Independence Day, one of the most significant events in the country’s history. The day commemorates India’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947. This historic event is a monument to the millions of people who sacrificed their lives for the independence movement, their unwavering resilience and indomitable spirit.

The Know India website states: “Every August 15, India holds religious celebrations across the country, and Independence Day occupies an important position in national holidays because it reminds every Indian of the beginning of a new era, an era of getting rid of more than 200 years of British colonial rule.”

“On August 15, 1947, India declared independence from British colonial rule and the ruling power was transferred to the leadership of the country. It was destiny that India gained independence as the struggle for freedom was long and arduous and witnessed the sacrifice of many freedom fighters who laid down their lives for it,” It added.

India’s road to independence was full of ups and downs and obstacles. Decades of oppression under British colonial rule aroused the Indian people’s strong desire for independence, and many visionary leaders sowed the seeds of resistance to colonial thinking.

The nation celebrates Independence Day with great pride and excitement. The national flag, Tiranga, is proudly hoisted on government buildings, homes and public places. People from all walks of life participate in parades, cultural events, flag hoisting ceremonies and patriotic songs fill the air.

Schools and colleges hold special assemblies and competitions to inculcate patriotism among the younger generation. Several community events, including cleanliness drives and social welfare programmes, are also held in schools to mark the day.

When is India’s Independence Day this year? Is it the 77th or 78th Independence Day?

On August 15, 2024, India will mark its 78th anniversary of independence. This may sound contradictory, considering we are celebrating our 77th year of independence. But August 15, 1948, was the first anniversary of India’s independence. So, while this is our 77th anniversary of freedom from British rule, this is our 78th anniversary of this momentous occasion.

No matter what year it is, Independence Day is a powerful testimony to India’s glorious past and bright future. It is a day for the Indian people to remember past achievements, meet present challenges and enthusiastically embrace future goals.
