The Know India website states: “Every August 15, India holds religious celebrations across the country, and Independence Day occupies an important position in national holidays because it reminds every Indian of the beginning of a new era, an era of getting rid of more than 200 years of British colonial rule.”

“On August 15, 1947, India declared independence from British colonial rule and the ruling power was transferred to the leadership of the country. It was destiny that India gained independence as the struggle for freedom was long and arduous and witnessed the sacrifice of many freedom fighters who laid down their lives for it,” It added.

But August 15, 1948, was the first anniversary of India’s independence. So, while this is our 77th anniversary of freedom from British rule, this is our 78th anniversary of this momentous occasion.
No matter what year it is, Independence Day is a powerful testimony to India’s glorious past and bright future. It is a day for the Indian people to remember past achievements, meet present challenges and enthusiastically embrace future goals.
