Yvonne Faye Goolagong Cowley AC MBE, born Yvonne Goolagong, is an outstanding Australian tennis player who has held the coveted world number one ranking throughout her illustrious career. She was born on 31 July 1951 in Griffith, New South Wales, Australia, and was one of the leading figures in women’s tennis during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Goolagong’s tennis career began at the age of 19 when she partnered with Margaret Court to win the French Open singles and Australian Open doubles titles. She continued to shine in 1971 when she won the Wimbledon women’s singles title. In 1980, Goolagong made history by becoming the first mother to win Wimbledon in 66 years.

  • Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley was the third of eight siblings and was born into an Aboriginal (Wiradjuri) family.
  • Her father, Ken Goolagong, was a sheep shearer and her mother, Melinda, was a homemaker.
  • Yvonne was born in Griffith, New South Wales, and grew up in the country town of Barelan.
  • Despite the challenges and prejudices faced by Indigenous Australians, Goolagong’s love of tennis began in Barelan, where local resident Bill Kurtzman noticed her interest and encouraged her to play on the local courts.
  • In 1965, Vic Edwards, the owner of a tennis school in Sydney, heard about Goolagong’s potential and traveled to Barelan to watch her play. He was so impressed that he convinced Goolagong’s parents to let her move to Sydney.
  • Yvonne attended Willoughby Girls’ High School in Sydney and obtained her High School Certificate in 1968.
  • While in Sydney, she lived with the family of Vic Edwards, who served as her legal guardian, coach and manager.
