Austin Creed’s acting career
Early in his career (2005-2007), Austin Creed pursued professional wrestling while attending Furman University. In 2005, he joined Rob Adonis’ Ultimate Christian Wrestling promotion and later developed his Austin Creed image with the World Wrestling Council in Greenville, South Carolina.
The character was heavily influenced by Apollo Creed from the Rocky series. Creed formed a successful tag team with Hayden Young in NWA Anarchy called Awesome Attraction, winning the event’s Most Popular Wrestler award in 2006.
In 2007, Creed made a bold move when he took a day off from college and popped up on the main floor of Deep South Wrestling (DSW), WWE’s developmental territory. Coincidentally, his future New Day partner Kofi Kingston was also present. DSW accepted a trial with Creed and won the vacant DSW Heavyweight Championship on July 12, 2007, becoming the final champion before the company folded.
Creed subsequently joined Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in 2007, changing their name to Consequences Creed. He appeared on TNA’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view alongside Ron Killings. Soon after, Creed signed a contract with TNA and competed in the X Division. He had notable matches and feuds during his time in TNA, including running as a member of the “Frontline” faction.
In 2010, Creed briefly competed in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), competing in the Super J Tag Tournament and J Sports Crown Openweight 6 Man Tag Tournament.
In July 2010, Creed signed a development contract with WWE. He debuted in Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) as Xavier Woods and later moved to NXT after FCW changed its name.
In NXT, Woods showed off fan gimmicks and incorporated his love of ’90s pop culture into his character. Eventually, he made his debut on Raw in November 2013, teaming up with R-Truth. The two had several feuds and matches before disbanding.
In 2014, Woods, Big E and Kofi Kingston formed a stable called The New Day. They were initially portrayed as baby-faced characters, but were criticized by audiences and turned against them. The New Day won the WWE Tag Team Championship and became one of the most successful and popular factions in WWE history.
