Who will be leaving and returning to Coronation Street in 2024?
In 2024, Coronation Street is seeing departures and returns. Lucy Fallon returns as Bethany Platt to stir up drama with Daniel and Daisy. Will Mellor will return to play prison character Harvey Gaskell, promising intense scenes. Jacqueline Leonard reprises her role as Joseph Brown’s grandmother Linda Hancock, who brings her lavish spending habits back to Weatherfield.

The British soap opera Coronation Street was criticized in the 1990s for its lack of racial diversity. In 1992, the Broadcasting Standards Board criticized the show for its depiction of a bygone era and its low representation of ethnic minorities. New characters were introduced, including the first regular non-white family in 1999, the Desai family. In 2000, the show celebrated its 40th anniversary, and in 2010 it became the longest-running television soap opera in the world.
The 50th anniversary in 2010 saw a tragic tram accident. The show continued to evolve throughout the 2010s and 2020s, addressing social issues and adapting to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, ITV announced that Coronation Street would permanently air three 60-minute episodes per week. The soap continues to tell impactful storylines in 2023, tackling issues such as stalking, rape and motor neurone disease.

One spin-off, Pardon the Expression, launched in 1965, told the story of Leonard Swindley, a character who left Weatherfield to become an assistant manager at a fictional department store. The show ran for two seasons until 1966. A short-lived sequel, “Lights Out” aired in 1967, in which Arthur Lowe reprized the role of Swindley for a single season.
From 1985 to 1988, Granada Television produced the sitcom The McGregor Brothers, whose characters originally appeared in episodes of Coronation Street. Another spin-off, “Albion Market”, was launched in 1985 but only lasted a year.
These spin-offs allow viewers to explore new adventures and characters outside the familiar cobblestones of Coronation Street.
