Hindenburg Research, a US short-selling agency, accused Securities and Exchange Board of India chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband of abusing their power. The Buchs cited documents from whistleblower Hindenburg, alleging that they made secret investments overseas and were related to Adani’s “fund misappropriation scandal.”

Hindenburg Research claims in its latest report that after taking charge of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, Mahabhi Puri Bhushi introduced new laws specifically to benefit certain companies, such as Blackstone, where Mahabhi’s husband Dhawal Bhushi works as a consultant.

Madhabi Puri Buch, born in 1966, is the current chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the first woman to hold the position.

She is married to Dhawal Buch. They have a son named Abhay.

Madhabi Puri Buch completed her initial education in two cities, Fort Convent School in Mumbai and the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Delhi.

She completed her undergraduate studies in Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi and her MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad.

Madhabi Puri Buch started her career at the ICICI Group where she worked for 17 years. During this period, she served as Executive Director of ICICI Bank for 12 years and as Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Securities from February 2009 to May 2011. She has also worked in other units of ICICI such as ICICI Web Trade Ltd and ICICI HFC Ltd.

In 2011, she moved to Singapore to serve as a principal at Greater Pacific Capital LLP. She later founded Agora Advisory Pvt Ltd and worked at the Shanghai New Development Bank for three years.

Additionally, Madhabi serves as a non-executive director in several large companies, including Idea Cellular (2011-2017), Max Healthcare, Zensar Technologies, Innoven Capital and Gabelhorn Investments.

She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India on March 1, 2022. Her term was initially set for three years, with the possibility of extension to five years or until she reaches the age of 65. She was appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, and the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC) oversaw the selection process.
