Early life and political career
Gabbard was born in American Samoa on April 12, 1981, but grew up in Hawaii. She has been politically active since childhood. The congresswoman served in the Hawaii House of Representatives from 2002 to 2004, but she was deployed to Iraq as a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard.
