Mumford & Sons was formed in late 2007 by multi-instrumentalists Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwane, Ben Lovett and Winston Marshall. Band members showcase their talents on a variety of instruments including acoustic guitar, drums, keyboards, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin and resonator guitar.
The band’s name was derived from Marcus Mumford’s prominent role in organizing the band and performing, and Lovett said the name was intended to evoke the feel of an “outdated family business name.”
During that time, several similar bands gained popularity in West London, leading to the emergence of the label “West London Folk Scene”. Mumford, however, downplayed that description as an exaggeration.
He explained that Mumford & Sons coincidentally played in the same area as a number of other folk acts and were not part of the official scene. Speaking to the Herald Sun, Marcus Mumford said: “It’s not really a ballad. Well, some of it is, and it’s certainly not a scene.
Someone got overly excited about a few bands that lived within a hundred mile radius and put them in a box and packaged them for sale. This is a community, not a scene. This is not exclusive. The band’s sound has drawn comparisons to artists such as Noah and the Whale, Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling, who had previously included Marshall, Mumford and Dwane in her backing band.
In early 2008, the band joined forces with manager Adam Tudhope, who was also linked to management company Everybody’s, which represents artists such as Keane and Laura Marling. Through Tudhope’s connections, Mumford & Sons came to the attention of their future A&R representative at Island Records, Louis Bloom, who began to follow the band’s progress closely.
Bloom revealed to HitQuarters that the band was still in its early stages at the time and wasn’t ready to sign a deal with a record label. He said: “There was no one there, just a few friends and they needed time to develop.
Over the next six months I kept going to see them and they gained fans every time.” In February 2008, Mumford & Sons began an extensive tour with support from artists including Alessi’s Ark, Sons of Noel and Adrian UK tour with Peggy Sue et al. The band made their debut at Glastonbury Festival in June 2008.
They also toured Australia with Laura Marling, whose understated stage presence propelled Marcus Mumford into the spotlight. This experience influenced the way he interacts with Mumford & Sons audiences, aiming to establish frequent interactions and create a comfortable, casual atmosphere.
Mumford & Sons’ original project was an EP called Love Your Ground, which took a year to complete and was eventually released in November 2008 on Chess Club Records. It marked the band’s first official release, showcasing their musical abilities and setting the stage for their subsequent achievements in the music industry.
