The British gave this name

The name Mall Road in the hill station was not given by Indians, but by the British. This concept was brought to India by British military officers. They used to visit these hill stations for recreation besides governance.

Shangcheng Road was built for convenience

When the plains of India were very hot, the British often moved their families to these cold hill stations in India. They also needed a systematic place to live comfortably with their families, and Mall Road was built for just that.

Shangcheng Road got its name from this

On one side of the road from the hill station lived British officers with their wives and children. On the other side, soldiers live alone. Therefore, it was named “Marriage Accommodation and Living Line” (MALL Road).

Facilities are arranged on the roadside

Besides living in this mall road, the British also opened various shops, restaurants and hotels according to their needs to get all the facilities on one road. Their houses were also located on this road, which have now been converted into government offices, hotels and large restaurants.
