World Sparrow Day 2025: Why Are Sparrows Going Extinct?

Every March 20, the World commemorates World Sparrow Day to raise awareness of the decrease in sparrow population. This year’s focus is on “a tribute to the little messenger of nature”, emphasizing the important role that sparrows play in maintaining ecological balance and calling for conservation. Although they are essential, sparrows are threatened by extinction due to various environmental and human factors.

The ecological importance of sparrows

Sparrows are not only cute birds; they are an integral part of the ecosystem. They regulate insect populations by eating pests, thus minimizing the use of pesticides on farms. Sparrows also contribute to pollination and seed dispersion, supporting biodiversity in rural and urban areas. Therefore, their decline has a serious impact on ecosystem well-being.

Causes of the decline

A variety of reasons for the decline in the population of sparrows:

Urbanization and habitat loss: The sudden growth of cities leads to the loss of natural habitats in which sparrows previously lived. Contemporary buildings do not provide nesting areas and greening areas that sparrows need to survive.

Use of pesticides: The large amount of chemical pesticides applied to crops can reduce insect populations, which forms a major part of the sparrow diet. Not only will it hinder their diet, but the food chain is affected.

Climate change: Changes in climate pattern affect sparrows’ reproduction and migration patterns, further reducing their number. Climate change can also change food supply, making survival more difficult.

Pollution and Industrialization: Urban pollution damages sparrows’ respiratory system and reduces insect populations. Industrialization has turned cities into concrete jungles without natural habitat and nests.

Predation and public ignorance: Predation by cats, rats and other urban predators, accompanied by public ignorance of the plight of sparrows, has exacerbated their disappearance.

Protection measures

To address the decline of sparrows, several protective measures are being taken:

  • Habitat Restoration: Creating habitat and restoration with sparrow nesting sites is essential. Urban planners are urged to integrate traditional architectural elements that provide nesting opportunities.
  • Pesticide regulation: Strengthening pesticide regulations can encourage organic agriculture, which is beneficial to farmers and birds.
  • Public awareness and community engagement: Raising public awareness among the public, i.e. the need to preserve sparrows and attract communities to participate in conservation activities, such as installing nested boxes, can go a long way.

Celebrating World Sparrow Day

To celebrate World Sparrow Day, there are several activities that people can engage in:

  • Install bird feeder: Maintain the sparrow population by supplying grain and water through the bird feeder.
  • Construct nesting space: Fixing tiny nesting boxes on the garden and balcony provides nesting areas for sparrows.
  • Hosting Awareness Program: Organizing speeches and presentations in communities and schools provides an awareness of sparrow protection.

The disappearance of sparrows is a key environmental issue that needs immediate attention. Understanding the reasons for their decline and participation in conservation is crucial to ensuring that we preserve these important birds for generations. World Sparrow Day reminds us of our obligation to keep the smallest messenger of nature and keep nature balanced and intact.
