World’s Top 10 Corrupt Countries: Check Corruption Perceptions Index 2024 Report

International Transparency released its 2024 Corruption Ideas Index (CPI), providing insights into the public sector corruption levels in 180 countries and territories. The CPI allocated scores from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean), providing a benchmark for evaluating global corruption.

2024 CPI’s main findings

The 2024 CPI report emphasizes that corruption remains a major global problem. Although 32 countries have taken significant steps in reducing corruption since 2012, a staggering 148 countries have stagnated or experienced worsening levels of corruption during the same period. The global average score remains stagnant, with 43, with more than two-thirds of countries scoring below 50. This means that about 85% of the world’s population (nearly 6.8 billion people) live in countries where corruption seriously undermines human rights and destroys lives.

The least corrupt country

For the seventh consecutive year, Denmark led the CPI with a score of 90 points, emphasizing its reputation for cleaning the public sector. Finland (88) and Singapore (84) followed closely, while New Zealand (83), Luxembourg (81), Norway (81), Switzerland (81), Sweden (80), Netherlands (78) and Australia (77) are also Gain a place among the top 10 smallest corrupt countries.

The most corrupt country

On the other end, South Sudan was named the most corrupt country with a score of just 8. Somalia, Venezuela and Syria are also facing major challenges of corruption.

Ranking of India and Pakistan

In South Asian countries, India and Pakistan showcase contrasting images. Pakistan, currently facing economic challenges, ranked 135th with a score of 27, down two positions from the previous year. On the other hand, India’s fares were better, but also slightly lower, falling to 96th with a score of 38. China ranked higher than India, finishing 76th with a 42-point score. Other regional countries include Bangladesh, including Bangladesh, which ranks 151 with a score of 23, and Sri Lanka ranked 121st with 32 points. Under the Taliban rule, Afghanistan ranked 165th with a score of 17.
