Kingdom Tears retains the stunning open-world action-adventure gameplay that captivated players in its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As players take on the role of the brave hero Link, they will embark on a mesmerizing adventure across the vast landscapes of Hyrule, now expanded to two new areas: The ethereal sky, adorned with countless floating islands, and dangerous abyss.
Throughout their journey, players gather resources, discover new weapons, and undertake missions to unlock the secrets of this fascinating world. Whether hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding or taking to the skies on a paraglider, players are free to explore the diverse environments that await them. A notable addition to Kingdom Tears is the introduction of the Zonai device, which serves a variety of purposes such as combat enhancements, propulsion mechanics, and exploration aids.
These devices grant players new abilities and expand the realm of strategic possibilities. The game introduces five new powers, namely Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall and Autobuild, which replace the runes from the previous game. Ultrasound allows players to manipulate objects and combine them using Zonai equipment to create innovative contraptions or vehicles. Fuse allows Link to enhance the properties and durability of his weapons and shields by combining materials or certain objects found in the world.
Temples and Korok Seeds return in Kingdom Tears. Clearing the temple will reward the player with valuable Light of Blessing. By collecting four of these lights, Link can increase his maximum number of hearts by one, or expand the size of his endurance wheel, allowing for longer periods of effort and exploration. Additionally, Korok Seeds serve as a means to expand Link’s inventory capacity, allowing him to carry more melee weapons, shields, and bows.
In the Abyss, a dangerous realm accessed through fissures that litter the surface, a new threat lurks: the malevolent substance known as the Gloom. Contact with or being attacked by an enemy shrouded in gloom will temporarily reduce Link’s maximum heart count by 1. This pain lasts until Link returns to the surface or seeks solace in the light of the Lightroot, a majestic plant found in the Abyss that restores his health to its full potential.
