What is Zero Shadow Day?
When the sun is placed precisely above the head at noon locally, a zero-shaded day occurs, resulting in the vertical object being left without shadow for a short period of time. This phenomenon is only possible between the tropics of cancer (23.5°N) and Capricorn (23.5°S), where the obvious path of the sun in the sky can be perfectly aligned with Zenith (directly above the observer).

- Why does this happen? The axis of the earth is inclined at about 23.5 degrees from the orbit around the sun. This tilt causes the sun position that changes northward in the sky during the year when the earth rotates. At twice a year, for points in the tropical region, the sun’s rays are perpendicular to the ground at noon locally, destroying the shadows on vertical objects.
Every part of the tropical region has two zero-shadow days each year: one is north-north (between the vernal equinox and June winter solstice), while the other is south (between the vernal solstice and September in June).
Bangalore’s Shadow Day
Bengaluru is around 13°N latitude and sees zero shadow days every six months. In 2025, it will fall around April 24-25 and then reappear on August 18. During these two days, between 12:17 and 12:23 PM, the sun is just overhead, and vertical objects (such as poles, trees and even humans) will not cast a shadow on the ground.

This phenomenon can be observed by both citizens and stargazers by placing vertical sticks or any standing object at a given time. In a few minutes, the shadow will completely decrease and disappear, only reappearing on the other side as the sun continues to move forward.
