Batman’s The Dark Knight trilogy stands to many as the best live-action Batman movies ever, and that is due to intriguing stories, gripping action scenes, and, above all, complex characters. There have been many live-action Batman movies over the years, but when director Christopher Nolan took on Batman Begins, the DC character was not nearly doing as well as he is nowadays when it comes to Batman’s theatrical appearances. Before Christian Bale’s debut as Bruce Wayne, the last live-action Batman actor was George Clooney.

Clooney’s Batman starred in 1997’s Batman & Robin, a brighter and goofier take on the Dark Knight, which was not at all what the hero’s adventures are supposed to be like. Then came The Dark Knight trilogy, which brought back a darker version of Batman and was loved by audiences and critics alike. Many heroes and villains contributed to the franchise’s success, but some more than others.
10 Ra’s Al Ghul
Appeared In: Batman Begins & The Dark Knight Rises

Liam Neeson is an accomplished actor, who has a particular set of skills that include a wide range when it comes to dramatic moments, as well as delivering exciting action scenes when it all goes down. Ra’s al Ghul is one of the most important characters to Christian Bale’s Batman. Neeson’s Batman villain was the first real mentor Bruce Wayne had on his path to becoming the Dark Knight, training under him and the League of Shadows.

Neeson did a great job as Ra’s, presenting the character’s calm and collected nature well, with a deadly persona waiting behind his controlled exterior. Appearing first as Henri Ducard and later revealing himself as Ra’s al Ghul, the plot twist allowed the character’s relationship with Bruce to be fleshed out more and gain a new level of complexity when he came to burn Gotham down.
9 Catwoman
Appeared In: The Dark Knight Rises

Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman only appeared in one movie in The Dark Knight trilogy, but she sure left her mark. Batman’s biggest love interest in the comics, Hathaway’s version of Selina Kyle also filled that role in the movie franchise. Catwoman and Batman had great chemistry in The Dark Knight Rises, with Selina’s unpredictability and playful personality being the perfect foil to Bruce’s Stoicism, helping get him back in action.

Selina’s anti-hero persona was perfectly used in the movie. First, she sells out Batman to Bane, acting out of her own interests. Then, she turns to the hero’s side, helping Batman save Gotham and even being the one to kill Bane. Selina and Bruce deciding to go to Italy and retire together was a fitting end to their story, allowing Catwoman and Batman to have a happy ending in live-action.

Long before he would come to win the Best Actor Oscar for a Christopher Nolan movie, Cillian Murphy played an overarching villain in the director’s The Dark Knight trilogy. Murphy’s Scarecrow was one of the main villains of Batman Begins, serving as a psychological foe to Batman in Christian Bale’s first movie outing as the DC hero. Jonathan Crane’s goal was to get people to be faced with their worst fears thanks to the Fear Toxin he had created.
Cillian Murphy’s The Dark Knight trilogy character is a special case, as Jonathan Crane is the only villain to appear in all three movies. While his biggest role came in his debut, Scarecrow still played interesting roles in subsequent movies. The villain was captured by Batman again in The Dark Knight and then became the judge of The Dark Knight Rises‘ “court,” giving people the choice of death or exile. His deranged actions and sadistic nature made him an interesting villain.
7 Bane

Tom Hardy’s Bane was not as deranged as some versions of the character have been in the comics, but he brought out the best in the villain. Bane can be so much more than just a physical threat to the Dark Knight, and Hardy’s version of Bane was also a smart character who executed a sound plan to take over Gotham City. That said, Bane was also the action-heavy villain fans have come to expect.

Bane had perhaps his most iconic comic book moment recreated in the movie, breaking Batman’s back. The villain was connected to the League of Shadows, protecting Talia al Ghul and wanting to destroy Batman to “fulfill Ra’s al Ghul’s destiny.” It was interesting to see Bane try to accomplish what Ra’s failed to do in Batman Begins, capping off the trilogy with a full-circle story.

6 Lucius Fox

Morgan Freeman was just the perfect casting for Lucius Fox. The actor brought an exciting dynamic to the character and gravitas that instantly made Lucius the most interesting person in the room the moment he walked in. That aspect is great for Lucius, and the character is one of the smartest when it comes to Batman’s side of DC Comics. Bruce Wayne could not have carried his Batman adventures without Lucius’ help in The Dark Knight franchise.
Lucius comes up with Batman’s gadgets, making him one of the hero’s most trusted allies. One of the best aspects of Freeman’s version of Lucius is that he is not afraid to call out Batman when he is wrong. The biggest of such instances comes when he is against Batman’s surveillance system, as it takes away the privacy of everyone in Gotham. Lucius was a needed voice of reason for the Bat.

5 Alfred Pennyworth
Appeared In: All Three The Dark Knight Trilogy Movies

Bruce Wayne’s two constant voices of reason as he became Batman were Morgan Freeman’s Lucius Fox and Michael Caine’s Alfred Pennyworth. The latter is the most important character to get right other than Batman when it comes to live-action adaptations of the Dark Knight. Thankfully, Caine knocked it out of the park as the character. Alfred’s loyalty to Bruce is shown time and again throughout The Dark Knight trilogy.
One of the franchise’s most heartbreaking moments comes from Alfred. Believing that Bruce has died, he has a tearful quote about having failed the Waynes. Michael Caine imbued every moment Alfred was onscreen with a sense of purpose. Alfred was smart, loyal, caring, and even funny, responsible for some tongue-in-cheek remarks throughout Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Alfred was always there for Bruce, and his advice often steered the hero to the right path.

4 Jim Gordon
Appeared In: All Three The Dark Knight Trilogy Movies

Gary Oldman is the ultimate Jim Gordon actor in live-action. While there have been other good versions of the character, Gordon is one of the most important players in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. It is interesting to see how Gordon’s relationship with Batman grows over the films, with Jim truly being tortured by the decision to pin Harvey Dent’s crimes on Batman at the end of The Dark Knight.
While Batman saves Gotham with a mask, Jim Gordon does so without it. In the middle of a corrupt Gotham City Police Department, Gordon stands as one of the few good cops left. His presence in the movies adds a detective feel to them, perfectly suiting the grounded and dark vibe of Nolan’s Batman universe. His strong morals and dedication to keeping the city safe, putting himself in harm’s way to do so, serve as inspiration to Batman.

3 Harvey Dent
Appeared In: The Dark Knight
Close
Harvey Dent’s tragic story was played out perfectly in The Dark Knight. Like Batman and Jim Gordon, Dent wanted to clean Gotham’s streets of crime. His ascension made him the knight in shining armor that Gotham needed. However, the Joker tore that symbol down — or attempted to — killing Rachel, indirectly burning Harvey’s face and thus leading the character on a path of revenge. Harvey Dent’s morals were gone, with Two-Face emerging.
Aaron Eckhart plays the role perfectly. He makes Dent a believable symbol that Gotham’s better days are ahead, turning in a charismatic performance as Harvey. However, when he becomes Two-Face, Eckhart dials up his performance, making the character unpredictable and adding tension to every scene he is in. Harvey Dent’s fall from grace is one of the most impactful stories in The Dark Knight trilogy.

It might look odd that Batman is not in first place on the list, but that has nothing to do with Christian Bale’s performance as Batman being bad in any way. It is just a matter that another was better. Still, Bale’s Batman is the lead character in The Dark Knight trilogy, and Bruce Wayne goes on an important journey throughout the franchise. Bale continues to be to this day the actor to best deliver both the Bruce and Batman sides of the character in live-action.

His version of Bruce Wayne served as the perfect cover for his vigilante activities, with Bale making the charming billionaire playboy stand out. As for his Batman, despite a raspy voice that was divisive, Bale’s Dark Knight was a great detective and put fear into Gotham’s criminals. Saving Gotham and retiring, while setting up John Blake to take over, allowed Bruce to have a happy ending with Catwoman in a way that Batman does not often get to have.

The Dark Knight is so iconic because of Heath Ledger’s Joker. He is electric every time he appears on the screen, stealing the scene from Batman, Harvey Dent, and whoever happens to interact with him. Ledger made the Joker a force to be reckoned with, as the Batman villain managed to corrupt Gotham’s shining hero, Harvey Dent. His chaotic plans led to impactful scenes, with the Joker being insanely quotable, which ensures his legacy in The Dark Knight trilogy will live on.
