Ad Vitam is one of the biggest movies on Netflix right now, and here are the 10 best movies like it. The 2025 French action thriller comes from director Rodolphe Lauga, with it making waves on the streaming service since its debut in January 2025. Revenge films have been a popular subgenre for decades now, and here are 10 other movies that fans of Ad Vitam may love.

Ad Vitam follows the formula of a typical action thriller, with it focusing on Guillaume Canet’s Franck, a man who survives an attempted murder by unknown assailants. However, the criminals also kidnap his wife, sending him on a quest for revenge to rescue her before it is too late. Franck’s journey also gets him involved in a government conspiracy, with him uncovering secrets about his situation while also going after his wife’s kidnappers.

Dev Patel directed and stars in Monkey Man, one of the best action movies of 2024, and it is a fantastic follow-up to Ad Vitam. Monkey Man follows Dev Patel’s Kid, an everyday man who moonlights as a popular member of a fight club. While wearing his monkey mask, Kid makes ends meet by beating up his opponents. However, he eventually discovers a way to get himself out of this position of poverty for good, with him using his fighting prowess to take on the city’s elite.

Like many of the other entries on this list, Monkey Man sees its protagonist use physical violence to go up against systemic violence, with Dev Patel’s character taking on the people who keep him and people like him oppressed. While Monkey Man‘s political and spiritual themes are what make the movie great, the action far exceeds what can be found in most other revenge thrillers, meaning that Monkey Man should be watched by any fans of Ad Vitam.

Athena

Athena movie

2022’s Athena may not be the most popular Netflix movie, but it makes for a fantastic companion piece to Ad Vitam. The French action drama film comes from director Romain Gavras, with it following three brothers as they take on a corrupt police force after their youngest brother is killed by a group of officers. The critically acclaimed film has gained a following since its original release, with it being a fantastic addition to the genre.

Much like in Ad Vitam‘s story, Athena sees its main characters face off against the government and corruption, with the police being the main antagonists of the film. While there are plenty of other action thrillers that have taken on this story, Athena is a French film, making it particularly similar to Ad Vitam. Plus, Athena is on Netflix, meaning that it can be watched in the same place as Ad Vitam.

Netflix has been releasing all kinds of revenge thrillers lately, and 2024’s immensely popular Rebel Ridge is one of the best entries in the genre. Rebel Ridge was directed by Jeremy Saulnier and follows Aaron Pierre as Terry Richmond, a man who is stopped by the police while heading to bail out his brother. After the police seize the bail money, they learn that Terry Richmond is a highly-trained former Marine, with him seeking revenge on the corruption within the small town.

Like Ad Vitam and the other movies on this list, Rebel Ridge focuses on its protagonist taking on corruption, the police, and the government. Pierre’s character is also constantly accused of crimes, meaning that he must continuously clear his name throughout the film. Rebel Ridge is one of the most popular Netflix Original movies of 2024, and it is still a great pick to watch in 2025.

Death Wish is one of the most iconic revenge action thrillers of all time, with it still having an influence on the genre to this day. While there have been all kinds of sequels and even a remake, the original 1974 Death Wish is still the best one to watch. Directed by Michael Winner, Death Wish follows Charles Bronson’s Paul Kersey, a mild-mannered man who snaps and seeks revenge after a group of criminals murders his wife and sexually assaults his daughter.

The controversial revenge movie essentially made the revenge subgenre a household name, with Ad Vitam most likely not existing if it weren’t for the 1974 film. Death Wish is also a good time investment for viewers who want more of these movies, as the original film series has five entries. Plus, there is even a 2018 Death Wish remake starring Bruce Willis for fans who want the entire Death Wish experience.

Stories about a man who wants to rescue his wife and punish those who wronged him don’t just have to take place in the modern day, as this is a common story seen in the Western genre. One of the most popular examples of this is director Quentin Tarantino’s hit film Django Unchained, which stars Jamie Foxx as the titular slave-turned-gunslinger. In the film, Django goes on a quest across the South to rescue his wife Broomhilda and kill her enslavers.

Django Unchained is a fantastic shake-up of the type of story that Ad Vitam is telling, with its Western genre, Southern setting, and Tarintino direction making it an entirely unique experience. Django Unchained has remained one of the iconic director’s most popular movies since it was first released in 2012, and it is still a great pick to this day.

Another fantastic Western revenge movie comes from director Alejandro González Iñárritu, with this being 2015’s The Revenant. The Western movie tells the true story of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Hugh Glass, a man who was left for dead by his fur-trapping party after being attacked by a bear. The trappers kill Glass’ son in order to cover up their abandonment of the party member. However, Glass manages to survive, with him clawing his way back to civilization in order to get revenge on his son’s killers.

Much like Ad Vitam and the other movies on this list, The Revenant tells the story of a lone protagonist who manages to take on an entire army of enemies out of his love for his family. Although the settings and tones are different, the narrative and thematic similarities make them fantastic companion pieces.
