With his career taking off after an impressive run of movies and television, Joseph Quinn is one of Hollywood’s hottest commodities right now, with even more exciting projects on the horizon. Joseph Quinn is largely known for his breakout role in Stranger Things, but he had already appeared in a number of roles prior to that. Some of these include Dickensian, Les Misérables, Howards End, and Small Axe.
His career after Stranger Things is where he truly began to pick up steam, securing major roles in A Quiet Place: Day One, and Gladiator II, the follow-up epic to Ridley Scott’s masterpiece. Joseph Quinn’s 2025 looks to be even bigger as he secured the role of Johnny Storm in the MCU’s Fantastic Four: First Steps, the first time Marvel Studios will be bringing their first family into the MCU timeline.

Tasked with following up one of the greatest “sword-and-sandal” movies of all time, Gladiator II sees Ridley Scott in fine form, crafting a worthy successor full of intense action, and even more political intrigue. The story follows Lucius Verus Aurelius, who is eventually sold into slavery and forced to become a gladiator. The performances of nearly all involved are the major highlights of Gladiator II, with stellar work across the board, particularly from Denzel Washington.

Joseph Quinn is incredible in Gladiator II as Emperor Geta, the co-emperor of Rome alongside his brother. Vying for complete power, Geta wants full control of Rome, and Joseph Quinn’s larger-than-life performance of the character fits right in with his role in the story. He gets lost in the role of the ruthless emperor, showing just how talented of an actor he is.

Bringing a variety of characters together from a number of Charles Dickens’ works in a London neighborhood, finding themselves caught up in a murder investigation, Dickensian is a highly enjoyable drama that celebrates the work of the famous author. Seeing iconic literary characters interact in a compelling story is a novel idea, and each character gets a chance to shine throughout Dickensian, which never feels overstuffed despite the premise.
Joseph Quinn plays Arthur Havisham to perfection, a significant character in Great Expectations, who has an important role to play in Dickensian. Arthur Havisham was a complex character throughout his time in the role, and Joseph Quinn plays him with grace and subtlety. It’s one of the earlier roles in Quinn’s career, but a strong indication of the great work he would go on to do.

Based on the novel of the same name, the BBC adaptation of Howards End is a remarkable take on the source material. It explores class divisions in England in the early 1900s, told through the lens of three different families that all have their own ideals and sense of morality, including wealth, intellectualism, and the working class. It’s a beautiful-looking miniseries with some incredible performances from the impressive cast, with Hayley Atwell being a notable standout.
Joseph Quinn plays Leonard Bast, a lower-class clerk who captures the interest of the idealistic Schlegel family. Bast must navigate social class throughout his interactions with the Schlegels and Joseph Quinn does that remarkably, crafting a complex character with a significant amount of depth in the process. He is one of the show’s biggest standouts, delivering a knockout performance alongside Atwell.

Perhaps one of the greatest novels ever written, Les Misérables has seen its fair share of adaptations, ranging from plays to films and television series. BBC’s 2018 adaptation of Les Misérables is the most recent take on the source material and an incredibly made one at that. The long-form of TV really allows for the series to dive into the complexity of the characters, highlighting how incredibly written they were from the very beginning.
Joseph Quinn plays Enjolras in Les Misérables, the charismatic leader of the Friends of the ABC, an association of revolutionary French republican students. He fights for the rights of the working class, poor, sick, needy, and disabled, making him an incredibly compelling character with a strong sense of morality. Joseph Quinn does Enjolras justice through his performance, capturing what makes the character so great.

Written and directed by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place was a remarkable success, kickstarting a brand-new horror franchise. After two films that have already taken place in the apocalypse, A Quiet Place: Day One brings the franchise back to the start, chronicling the terrifying beginning of the end of the world. It’s possibly the best entry in the franchise so far, with a palpable sense of dread throughout, focusing on developing its characters while remaining intense the whole time.

Small Axe is an anthology film series created and directed by British filmmaker, Steve McQueen. The anthology consists of five different movies that tell the story of West Indian immigrants in London from the 1960s to the 1980s. Joseph Quinn appears in Mangrove, the first film in the anthology, focusing on the trial of the Mangrove Nine in 1971, a group of Black British activists tried for inciting a riot. It’s a remarkable work, focusing on institutional racism and those most affected by it.

Joseph Quinn doesn’t have a big role in the Mangrove film in Small Axe, appearing as PC Dixon, a new member of the police force. He is witness to the racism that goes on behind the scenes, showing just how prevalent it was during that time. It can often be a tough watch, but Joseph Quinn is remarkable in his role, obviously taken aback by what he hears, but not pushing against it like he should.

Those who know anything about Game of Thrones understand how it goes. The final season dropped the ball, but for most of the show’s run, it was largely considered not only one of HBO’s best shows ever but one of the greatest shows of all time in general. Despite stumbling at the end, Game of Thrones is remarkable television, following the power struggle of various characters all vying for a seat on the Iron Throne. It changed television forever when it was released.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the third TV series set in Westeros, will release in late 2025.
Like a lot of British actors still early in their careers, Joseph Quinn only appears in one episode of Game of Thrones. He plays Koner, a soldier of House Stark, who is stationed at the front gate of Winterfell. He attempts to stop Arya Stark from entering the gate, claiming she is dead when Arya informs them of who she is. It’s not a massive role, but it’s fun seeing Joseph Quinn in Game of Thrones, and his performance is quite great for the little screen time he has.

The directorial debut of Luna Carmoon, Hoard is a remarkable coming-of-age film, revolving around a teenager whose mother used to be an obsessive hoarder. It is set in both the 80s and the 90s, chronicling two different periods in a young woman’s life. Hoard works so well by diving into the complexity of its characters and the trauma they try and work through while exploring their emerging sexuality. It’s a remarkable debut film, and one full of fantastic performances.
Joseph Quinn plays Michael in Hoard, a former foster child of Samantha Spiro’s Michelle, who is also the foster mother of Suara Lightfoot Leon’s Maria, the main character in the film. Joseph Quinn is fantastic as Michael and his chemistry with Suara Lightfoot Leon is electric, as the two of them explore who they are with each other while reconciling with their pasts.

Stranger Things was an instant pop culture icon when it was first released in 2016, and has gone on to be one of Netflix’s most successful shows. Capturing audience nostalgia for the 1980s, Stranger Things succeeds largely because of the enjoyable cast of characters at its core, as they struggle with friendship and relationships alongside trying to survive against hostile creatures from another dimension. It’s an incredible series, with each episode feeling more and more massive as each season progresses.
