10 Best Movies Like Five Nights At Freddy’s

Five Nights at Freddy’s adapts the eponymous Scott Cawthon video game franchise into its first feature-length movie in an expected new franchise. Josh Hutcherson stars as Mike Schmidt, a security guard by trade who picks up a new job at an abandoned pizzeria as he battles for custody of his little sister after their parent’s deaths. However, once he starts working his overnight shifts, he discovers Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza’s animatronics come to live at night, and he ends up fighting for his life when his sister ends up trapped in the restaurant with him.

Five Nights at Freddy’s divided critics and audiences, but it was a box office success, making $291.1 million on a $20 million budget, and its critical reviews never hurt its success. As a result, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is coming, with an expected Christmas 2025 release date, which should excite fans of the movie and the games on which it is based. However, for fans who loved the first movie, there are plenty of other movies like Five Nights at Freddy’s to tide them over as they await the next chapter in this new horror franchise.

The Banana Splits Movie also features an ensemble of murderous animatronics. It follows a family attending a live taping of The Banana Splits television series (which in real life was a Hanna-Barbera kids’ series from 1968). However, in this rendition, the eponymous characters are played by animatronics that go haywire and enact a violent rampage in the television studio after learning the network was canceling their show. Much like Five Nights at Freddy’s, it is a family that has to fight for their lives, but in this case, it is a family of five.

The Banana Splits Movie proves how retro kids’ shows can actually be terrifying, and it plays with this capability to create several unsettling and hilarious scenes. As an R-rated horror movie, The Banana Splits Movie is much more graphic than the PG-13 Five Fights at Freddy’s. When released, the Five Nights at Freddy’s video games had been around for five years, which caused many people to compare the two franchises. Warner Bros made the film after losing its rights to Five Nights (via Polygon).

Similarly to Five Nights at Freddy’s, Puppet Master features deadly sentient creatures who have become iconic antiheroes. There have been 10 Puppet Master movies in total, each following the murderous exploits of sadistic killer puppets. The first installment arrived in 1989, with a group of psychics arriving at a former colleague’s home after his death only to find themselves on the run from killer puppets brought to life via Ancient Egyptian mysticism. However, soon, the puppets take on a life of their own.

The puppet antagonists cultivated a cult following similar to the Five Nights at Freddy’s game franchise, which also cherishes its killer antagonists. Puppet Master features many grisly death scenes, offering a more violent interpretation of the killer doll subgenre. Interestingly, the puppets were more sympathetic than most humans in the movies. The puppets even had a crossover with the Demonic Toys franchise, where they were the heroes. The 15th entry in the franchise was released in 2022.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space

PG-13
Horror Sci-FiComedy

A 1980s satirical horror film, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, comes from the Chiodo Brothers; that takes place in a town being terrorized by alien “Klowns” that kill its residents by turning them into cotton candy and drinking their blood. When Mike Tobacco and Debbie Stone are enjoying a romantic evening at Lover’s Lane, they notice a strange object falling to earth, a peculiar circus tent. From that tent emerges “Klowns,” aliens with only one goal in mind – murder. Mike and his friends will band together to stop the menacing Killer Klowns before their town is wiped out and the “circus” stays forever.

Like Five Nights at Freddy’s, Killer Klowns From Outer Space is an ideal family-friendly horror movie. It features gentle frights and humor throughout its whimsical narrative. Killer Klowns From Outer Space features aliens who arrive on Earth resembling clowns to capture, kill, and harvest humans in a small town to eat for sustenance. The eponymous alien invaders have also become genre icons, boasting a fervent cult following.

Tonally, Killer Klowns From Outer Space is the perfect movie to watch after Five Nights at Freddy’s – particularly recommended for viewers interested in a lighthearted horror film with absurd antagonists. However, be aware this is an older cult classic horror movie that used practical effects, including rubber suits, and much of the film’s appearance is really a sign of its times. With that said, it remains a beloved cult classic because it took a ludicrous idea and created something fun and wacky for horror fans.

Willy’s Wonderland

HorrorThriller

Willy’s Wonderland is a 2021 horror film starring Nicolas Cage. Cage plays The Janitor, who is tasked with cleaning up Willy’s Wonderland. What seems like a relatively easy job becomes a nightmare when the animatronic animals become possessed and attack the Janitor. Kevin Lewis directed the film, which got mixed reviews upon release.

Willy’s Wonderland depicted killer animatronics two years before Five Nights at Freddy’s. Willy’s Wonderland is strikingly similar to Five Nights at Freddy’s, following a largely identical premise. Nicolas Cage plays an unnamed custodian working overnight in an abandoned restaurant, where waves of possessed animatronic mascots attack him. Willy’s Wonderland offers a slightly more extreme rendition of this narrative, with more violence and more intense encounters with killer robots.

Willy’s Wonderland uses red oil to suggest that the mascots are bleeding, making Cage’s brutal battle against them appear much more gory and violent. This is much more of an adult version of Five Nights at Freddy’s and goes into hardcore detail when depicting the violence and rage of the fight for survival. The film also differs in that the animatronics here are purely evil. The film mostly passed unseen since its release was delayed because of the pandemic and went straight to video with only a limited theatrical run.

Satan’s Little Helper (2004)

A Boy Assists A Serial Killer Dressed As Satan

A boy in a mask sits on a sofa while Satan stands behind him in Satan's Little Helper.

Satan’s Little Helper is much more graphic than Five Nights at Freddy’s, but its dark humor and lumbering villain are notably similar. It follows a young boy who mistakes a violent serial killer for Satan – the protagonist of his favorite video game. Consequently, the child joins Satan on his Halloween killing spree. The rictus grin on Satan’s face is similar to the frightening animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy’s, which also boasts incredibly intricate and impressive character designs.

Satan’s Little Helper is markedly more gory than Five Nights at Freddy’s but worth considering for those looking for something similar. The fact that the movie has the kid mistake the killer for a video game character is another subtle similarity to Five Nights at Freddy’s, although the latter movie is based on a video game, but never really plays into that in the film. Another difference between the two is that Five Nights plays things seriously, while Satan’s Little Helper is more of a satire and a black comedy.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark proffers several delightful frights comparable to the degree of horror presented in Five Nights at Freddy’s. Directed by André Øvredal (The Last Voyage of the Demeter), this was a rare light-hearted horror movie by the normally dark director, but it was Guillermo del Toro’s hand as the executive producer that helped lend it the fairy tale aspects that helped make it a horror movie for kids of all ages. It was also critically praised, with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Christmas Bloody Christmas takes the murderous animatronic premise to its most gruesome extremes. It features a toy shop’s robotic Santa Claus going haywire and attacking nearby residents. Christmas Bloody Christmas relishes its brutality, featuring many creative and gruesome death sequences enacted by the robotic Santa Claus. It is substantially more grisly than Five Nights at Freddy’s and intended for a more mature audience.

Nevertheless, audiences looking for another movie depicting a rampaging animatronic will likely enjoy Christmas Bloody Christmas. On top of the similarities with Five Nights at Freddy’s concerning the animatronics coming to life and killing people, Christmas Bloody Christmas joins the growing list of holiday horror movies with a killer Santa, which now includes releases like Santa Claws, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Rare Exports, Santa’s Slay, and Krampus.

Benny Loves You is a comedy horror movie that depicts a child’s plush toy coming to life after its owner throws it away. The titular Benny returns for violent vengeance, dispatching swathes of hapless humans. The entire theme of the movie takes the idea of Toy Story and the idea of abandonment. However, unlike Pixar’s franchise, where Andy gives away his toys when he goes to college, this film sees an adult throw out all his old toys only to find one coming to life and seek revenge for its abandonment.

While more graphic than Five Nights At Freddy’s, much of the violence in Benny Loves You is presented humorously. As a result, it features a comparable level of terror while also being delivered by a friendly, cuddly villain. Benny Loves You gleefully explores the sentient killer toy subgenre, including a similar tone and themes as Five Nights at Freddy’s, and is also suitable for teenage viewers. The film was also set up as a possible franchise, with a stinger at the end, and its positive reviews make that a possibility.

Child’s Play is one of the most successful horror franchises of all time and covers a similar thematic premise as Five Nights at Freddy’s. It follows a young boy who is gifted a doll possessed by the subconscious of a serial killer. This is the opposite of Five Nights at Freddy’s animatronics, possessed by the ghosts of children murdered by a serial killer. Exceedingly violent and incredibly entertaining, Child’s Play offers the prototype of killer doll movies and establishes many tropes and themes.

Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey is a wildly violent adaptation of the beloved children’s story, created after the original A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard characters entered the public domain. The plot concerns monstrous versions of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet embarking on a bloodthirsty frenzy after Christopher Robin abandons them when he goes to college. The enormous, terrifying animals compare well to the anthropomorphic mascots depicted in Five Nights at Freddy’s but display greater cruelty.

The film received mostly poor reviews, but it was never meant for critics and was instead meant for hardcore horror fans. Much like Five Nights at Freddy’s, which was more meant for video game fans than film critics, both movies based the style and premise of the releases on what their fan bases wanted. Relatively self-aware of its bizarre premise, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is a solid pick for a movie to watch after Five Nights at Freddy’s, but beware that it is much more gruesome and R-rated in its presentation.
