Spellbound (2024)

Streaming: Netflix

Close

Skydance Animation produced an animated feature film that premiered on Netflix on November 22, 2024: Spellbound. The film follows a young princess named Ellian, who is now responsible for breaking the curse that turned her parents into monsters and sent their kingdom into chaos. Spellbound has an epic voice cast of characters, including Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow, Tituss Burgess, Nathan Lane, John Ratzenberger, and Jordan Fisher. This talented cast also produced a stellar soundtrack for Spellbound, with music composed by the renowned Alan Menken.

Although Spellbound is an animated movie, it is still an excellent follow-up to Wicked. Both films are fantasy adventure musicals with compelling magic systems. Furthermore, Spellbound and Wicked both feature bittersweetness in their endings. Wicked‘s ending portrays Elphaba and Glinda going their separate ways and choosing their own paths. Spellbound‘s ending is happier, but it still contains a surprisingly bittersweet element because Ellian’s parents permanently split—but it does not change their love for her.

Wonka (2023)

Streaming: MAX, Prime Video

Close

Wonka is another great movie to stream, given its commonalities with Wicked. Wonka is a prequel to the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, the same way that Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The Willy Wonka prequel follows the titular character in his early days as a candy maker as he strives to establish his business while his competitor, Arthur Slugworth, schemes to bring him down. Wonka reached major milestones during its box office run, being one of only seven films to gross more than $600 million worldwide.

Otherwise, Wonka is available to rent or buy on various digital platforms, including Apple TV+, Google Play, and YouTube.

The Little Mermaid (2023)

Streaming: Disney+

Close

The Little Mermaid is a live-action adaptation of the 1989 beloved animated classic of the same name. However, The Little Mermaid has also been adapted for Broadway, similar to Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is the book Wicked is based on. Broadway adaptations and their source materials often portray significant changes, which is no different for The Little Mermaid and Wicked. The Wicked movie has several big changes from Gregory Maguire’s book, while Disney’s The Little Mermaid significantly differs from Hans Christian Andersen’s original tragedy.

The Little Mermaid‘s narrative is highly character-driven, given that the story focuses on Ariel and her desire to become human. Wicked‘s narrative is also character-driven for a different reason—Elphaba desires to work on her powers to meet the Wizard. Furthermore, both movies have stellar soundtracks, with songs such as “Part of Your World,” “Defying Gravity,” “Under the Sea,” and “One Short Day.” The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is available to stream on Disney+, and it is also available to rent and buy on various digital platforms.

Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021)

Streaming: Netflix

At first glance, Tick, Tick… Boom! seems so different from Wicked. Tick, Tick… Boom! is a semi-autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, while Wicked is a fantasy musical that explores a different interpretation of the classic Wizard of Oz. The former is grounded in reality, while the latter takes place in a fictional universe with talking animals and magic. However, both movies are productions based on Broadway musicals, and both films have received high praise from critics: Tick, Tick… Boom! and Wicked received identical scores of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

All three Descendants movies—as well as the countless short films, shows, and TV specials—are available to stream on Disney+.

Into The Woods (2014)

Streaming: Disney+

Close

Like Wicked, Into the Woods is another movie adaptation of a classic Broadway musical. Although Into the Woods was not as successful as Wicked commercially and critically, the film is still akin to Wicked. Into the Woods features several iconic Brothers Grimm fairy tales combined into one story. Furthermore, Wicked and Into the Woods are musicals created by renowned Broadway composers Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz, respectively. Stephen Sondheim revolutionized the musical genre and Broadway productions, but Stephen Schwartz made his own impact with musicals such as Pippin and Wicked.

Wicked and Into the Woods reimagine classic stories with darker themes that add more meaning to the source material.

Some of the best musicals are often inspired by literature, which is the case for both Wicked and Into the Woods. Wicked and Into the Woods reimagine classic stories with darker themes that add more meaning to the source material. Both movie musicals are great streaming options, especially through a critical lens. Into the Woods is available to stream on Disney+, but it is also available to rent or purchase on various digital platforms.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Streaming: MAX, Prime Video

Close

Besides both movies being adaptations of hit Broadway musicals, Mamma Mia! and Wicked do not seem to have much in common. Mamma Mia! revolves around Sophie Sheridan, a young girl about to be married, who invites three men to her wedding because one of them is her biological father. It is a feel-good musical with iconic ABBA songs, while Wicked is a thought-provoking fantasy musical based on Gregory Maguire’s book. However, both movie adaptations consist of star-studded casts, from Meryl Streep to Cynthia Erivo to Amanda Seyfried to Ariana Grande.

The Wicked movie brought all the songs from the Broadway musical’s first act to the screen, and though each is great, they weren’t created equal.

Furthermore, Wicked and Mamma Mia! have catchy soundtracks that make it easy to sing along to. Wicked might have more serious subject matter, but several songs are fun to sing, including “Popular,” “Dancing Through Life,” and “Defying Gravity.” Mamma Mia! has the iconic “Honey, Honey,” “Dancing Queen,” and, of course, the titular “Mamma Mia.” It goes to show that unexpected commonalities can be found in strange places. Mamma Mia! is available to stream on MAX, and it is also available on Prime Video with a MAX subscription included.

3

Enchanted (2007)

Streaming: Disney+

Close

Enchanted might be the most similar to Wicked. Not only are both movies reimaginings of classic stories, but Stephen Schwartz wrote the lyrics for both musicals. Of course, Schwartz created Wicked altogether, but he also wrote the lyrics for the Enchanted soundtrack, while Alan Menken composed the songs. Furthermore, both movies feature Idina Menzel in small roles—Menzel plays Robert’s fiancé, Nancy, in Enchanted. At the same time, Menzel makes a cameo appearance as one of the Emerald City Players as an homage to the original Broadway musical since Idina Menzel was the original Elphaba.

Enchanted and Wicked‘s similarities are fun and provide a renewed appreciation for both movies, especially Enchanted. Enchanted is an underrated Disney movie that deserves more love, and watching it while keeping Wicked in mind is a reminder of Stephen Schwartz’s incredible talent and the wonderful aspects of Enchanted. Since Enchanted is a Disney movie, the film is available to stream on Disney+ and rent or buy from other digital platforms.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997)

Streaming: Disney+

Close

There are many musical adaptations of the classic fairy tale Cinderella, but Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which premiered on ABC on November 2, 1997, is the version most similar to Wicked. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella does not include songs from Disney’s Cinderella, in the same way that Wicked does not include songs from The Wizard of Oz. Both movies stand strong as their own interpretations of the stories they are based on. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella has an excellent cast, including Brandy, Whitney Houston, Victor Garber, Bernadette Peters, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is not only the Cinderella adaptation that resembles Wicked the most, but it is also the best version of Cinderella. While Disney’s animated classic has better songs, there is just something magical about Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella that the other versions do not have. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is available to stream exclusively on Disney+.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Streaming: MAX, Prime Video

Close

Of course, there is no better film to watch alongside Wicked than The Wizard of Oz itself. There are many ways that Wicked is different from 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, and these differences are most fun to explore while watching the movies one after the other. The Wizard of Oz is a timeless movie that will remain one of the best films of all time.

There is no better treat than watching Wicked and The Wizard of Oz back to back, especially because several Wizard of Oz moments are completely different after watching Wicked. The Wizard of Oz is available to stream on MAX and Prime Video if a MAX subscription is included. The Wizard of Oz is also available to rent or buy on various digital platforms. Wicked will most likely follow with these streaming options in a few months.
