Despite being part of the same franchise and having the same premise, Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions TV show is very different from the 1999 movie of the same name. Directed by Roger Kumble and based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Cruel Intentions follows step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe), who make a bet for their entertainment that involves the daughter of their school’s new headmaster, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). Cruel Intentions spawned a failed prequel and a sequel, and has now returned as a TV show.

The Cruel Intentions TV show centers on wealthy step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), who also get involved in a bet but for very different reasons than that between Kathryn and Sebastian. Parallel to that are Caroline’s plans to get Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith) to join her sorority, along with Blaise’s (John Harlan Kim) sneaky plans to get money from his fraternity. These are just a couple of differences between the Cruel Intentions TV show and the 1999 movie, but there are more.

The Cruel Intentions TV show mostly takes place at a Washington D.C. college, where fraternities and sororities are a pretty big deal among its wealthy students. Caroline is the president of the Delta Phi sorority, while Lucien is the treasurer of Alpha Gamma and Blaise serves as social chair. There’s an anti-Greek movement on campus led by Beatrice Worth (Brooke Lena Johnson), which, along with a scandal at the last Spring Formal, puts fraternities and sororities at risk – but Caroline sees their salvation in Annie Grover.
In the movie, the focus is on Kathryn, Sebastian, Annette, and the bet they are all involved in.
Annie Grover is the Vice President’s daughter and a freshman at this college, so Caroline knows that, if Annie joins Delta Phi, they will be safe. Almost every one of the main character’s activities are related to their fraternities and sororities, which are never mentioned in the Cruel Intentions movie. In it, the focus is on Kathryn, Sebastian, Annette, and the bet they are all involved in, as well as the unexpected turns this takes.

9 Annie Grover Is The Vice President’s Daughter
The Cruel Intentions TV Show Goes Bigger With Annie

As mentioned above, in the Cruel Intentions movie, Annette Hargrove is the daughter of the new headmaster, but the TV show takes it many steps further. In the TV show, Annie Grover is the Vice President’s daughter, so all eyes are on her. Annie is followed around by bodyguards, making it slightly more difficult for Lucien to get close to her, and, of course, Delta Phi isn’t the only sorority looking to get Annie to join them. Caroline isn’t the only one interested in Annie, as her mother wants to meet the Vice President and wants Caroline to make it happen.

Annie being the Vice President’s daughter adds some extra “value” and a lot more risk to Caroline and Lucien’s bet, as one false move can trigger a major scandal. In the Cruel Intentions movie, Kathryn and Sebastian choose Annette as the target of their bet not because of her social status, but because Sebastian is bored and wants a challenge, and Annette wrote an article about being against sex without love.
8 Caroline & Lucien’s Bet Has A Purpose
It’s Not Just For Fun
Close
In the Cruel Intentions movie, Kathryn and Sebastian come up with the bet that kicks off the story for mere fun. As mentioned above, Sebastian wants a challenge as it’s very easy for him to seduce pretty much anyone, and Annette being firmly against sex without love is the type of challenge he’s looking for – and Kathryn is there to witness all just for her own entertainment. The terms of the bet are also clearer in the movie: if Sebastian has sex with Annette, Kathryn will finally have sex with him, but if he loses, she gets his beloved vintage car.

Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions TV show borrows the premise of the 1999 movie with some changes and a new cast, along with an actor from the movie.
In the TV show, Caroline challenges Lucien to seduce Annie and have sex with her so they can convince her to join Delta Phi – after all, Lucien has already slept with most of the sorority’s potential candidates. If he achieves this, Caroline will sleep with him, and later on in the series, she takes Lucien’s car from their parents’ garage to give it back to him as a consolation prize. Caroline’s bet and plan have a purpose, and it isn’t just to keep herself entertained at the expense of the pain of others.

Both Sebastian and Kathryn enjoy sex in the Cruel Intentions movie and aren’t scared or ashamed to admit it. Although the movie certainly focuses more on Sebastian’s sex life and how he tends to seduce anyone and then leave them after getting what he wants, Kathryn explicitly mentions that she enjoys sex. It’s not surprising, then, that their bet revolves around sex: in getting Sebastian to sleep with Annette and in Kathryn promising to have sex with Sebastian if he wins.

In the TV show, Caroline is driven by power, and she doesn’t show interest in sex as Kathryn does.
Just like Sebastian, it’s implied that Kathryn has various sex partners, and she even ends up seducing Cecile’s (Selma Blair) music teacher, Ronald Clifford (Sean Patrick Thomas), who Cecile has fallen for. In the TV show, Caroline is driven by power, and she doesn’t show interest in sex as Kathryn does – however, she does mention to Lucien that she loves sex after he finds her with Professor Chadwick (Thomas), but this happens so late that it’s hard to believe she could be as sex-driven as Kathryn.

6 Lucien’s Tapes VS Sebastian’s Journal
Lucien Has More Controversial Ways Of Keeping Track Of His Sexual Partners
Close
Both Sebastian and Lucien have multiple sex partners in their respective versions of Cruel Intentions, but they keep track of them in very different ways. Throughout the movie, Sebastian can be seen writing in his journal, and he does so in detail, even with photos and drawings. His journal is key to Kathryn’s downfall at the end of Cruel Intentions, as it’s thanks to it that everyone in college and Kathryn’s parents learn how evil she is and all the damage she caused to Annette, Cecile, and more.

In the Cruel Intentions TV show, Lucien doesn’t keep a journal – instead, he videotapes all his sexual encounters and uploads the videos to a file he shares with Caroline, who uses those videos for her own pleasure. The only video he doesn’t upload is the one with Annie, as he promised no one would see it and he fell in love with her. However, the TV show flipped Sebastian’s story and, instead of Lucien’s videos helping him and the rest, they are used by Caroline to hurt him, but he has one final move to destroy Caroline at a deep, personal level.
5 Blaise Has A Bigger Role Than Blaine
Blaise Does A Lot More In The Cruel Intentions TV Show
Close
Blaise is the equivalent to the movie’s Blaine (Joshua Jackson) in the Cruel Intentions TV show. Blaine is Sebastian’s friend and provider of weed, who has occasional sex with the school’s football star, Greg McConnell. Blaine helps Sebastian set Greg up because he’s a friend of Annette and someone had told her all about Sebastian’s habits of seducing students. Blaine’s role in the Cruel Intentions movie doesn’t go beyond that, but Blaise is given a bigger role in the story of the TV show.

What Blaise wants is to take the fraternity’s money, as he’s struggling financially and his parents owe money to the college, so he makes Scott sign checks. Lucien, as Alpha Gamma’s treasurer, finds out Blaise has been embezzling fraternity funds, and Blaise is kicked out – but he takes the fraternity’s books with him.

CeCe is to the Cruel Intentions TV show what Cecile is to the movie. The Cruel Intentions movie sees Kathryn taking Cecile under her wing, but it’s not because Kathryn has a good heart – it’s because Cecile is dating Kathryn’s ex-boyfriend, Court Reynolds, and she wants revenge as he left her for her promiscuity. Sebastian helps Kathryn corrupt Cecile when he learns that Cecile’s mother was the one who told Annette to stay away from him.
CeCe, on the other hand, is Caroline’s best friend and right hand.
When Kathryn realizes the romantic tension between Cecile and her music teacher, Ronald Clifford, she and Sebastian use this to further corrupt Cecile but also keep her apart from Ronald, who Kathryn ends up seducing. CeCe, on the other hand, is Caroline’s best friend and right hand, and she’s chronically stressed as she’s always busy, but she’s not as malleable and naive as Cecile.

3 Caroline Doesn’t Use CeCe For Revenge
Kathryn Wanted Revenge In Cruel Intentions

Another big difference between Cruel Intentions movie and TV show is the relationship between Caroline and CeCe. In the movie, Kathryn and Cecile meet when the latter’s mother comes to Kathryn to guide Cecile as she’s new in school, but as explained above, what Kathryn wants is revenge as Cecile is her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend. Kathryn manipulates Cecile as she pleases as she’s very naive, and there isn’t exactly a friendship between them.

To Caroline, however, CeCe is nothing more than a pawn, and she manipulates her as she pleases. Caroline doesn’t use CeCe for any revenge, but she does betray her.
2 Sean Patrick Thomas Plays A Different Teacher
Sean Patrick Thomas Is The Only Actor In Both The Movie & The TV Show

The only actor that the Cruel Intentions movie and TV show have in common is Sean Patrick Thomas. In the movie, Thomas plays Ronald Clifford, Cecile’s young music teacher. Cecile falls for Ronald and the feeling is mutual, but as Kathryn wants to corrupt and ruin Cecile, she tells Cecile’s mom about Ronald and he’s fired. Kathryn later seduces Ronald and tells him Sebastian hurt her and slept with Cecile, leading to a fight between Ronald and Sebastian that ends with Sebastian being run over.

The biggest difference between the Cruel Intentions movie and the TV show is the ending. In the movie, Sebastian dies when he’s run over. Annette tries to intervene in Sebastian and Ronald’s fight and is thrown into traffic, so Sebastian pushes her to safety but is hit by a taxi. As Annette already had Sebastian’s journal, she prints various copies and hands them to everyone in college with Cecile’s help during Sebastian’s funeral. This leads to Kathryn’s downfall, as everyone learns how evil she really is along with some of her darkest secrets.
In the TV show, Lucien doesn’t die, but he does get to hurt Caroline back after she releases his sex tapes. Knowing how bad Caroline’s relationship with her mother is and that the latter doesn’t really love Caroline, Lucien has sex with his stepmother and shares the video with Caroline. The Cruel Intentions TV show ends with Lucien driving away in his vintage car as he ignores Caroline and Annie’s calls.
