While prequels tend to add a lot of context and backstory for pivotal characters, they also showcase characters whom the viewers know are doomed down the line. With Hollywood continuing to bet it all on larger franchises and recognizable IPs, it makes sense that more prequel stories are beginning to pop up. From a spin-off TV show that expands on the plot of a movie, or a feature film from another point of view, prequels are creative ways to build a franchise from the ground up.

However, there is a flipside to the prequel that is unavoidable. While it allows viewers to get further insights into a story and characters that may not have gotten as much attention in the original, prequels have a definitive end that they need to work towards. For an original series, the story can end almost anywhere. But a prequel is trying to work up to the events of another story, and so, it is required to preserve the original.

Natasha Romanoff – Black Widow
The MCU is an expensive and vast franchise that has grown to include dozens of films, several TV shows, and hundreds of unique characters. However, the timeline has not always been straightforward. However, while those movies began in the past, they introduced the characters into the contemporary MCU. This was not the case when it came to Black Widow.

George Cooper – Young Sheldon
Young Sheldon was a spin-off of one of the most popular sitcoms of the 2000s, The Big Bang Theory. The show centered on the incredible young genius, Sheldon Cooper, and his life as a child growing up in a family that largely struggled to understand and relate to him. However, as was revealed in the original show, Sheldon’s father died when he was just 14 years old.
With this number looming as Young Sheldon progressed, fans were overtly aware that George would soon die in the show, but it was unclear when this would happen exactly. As it turns out, Young Sheldon took some liberties, and saw the events play out slightly differently than the original show, but regardless of any other changes, George Cooper Sr. does eventually pass away in the show’s final season.

Mufasa – Mufasa: The Lion King
Mufasa is one of the most beloved characters from any animated project, and when a story was announced to shine the spotlight on this heroic lion and his rise to power, it was bound to be a success. Mufasa: The Lion King followed Mufasa as a young cub, after he is separated from his parents. Fortunately, Mufasa is found by another cub, whose mother takes him in and raises him as her own, with the pair growing together as brothers.
However, the entire time, Mufasa and Taka are growing together, the fate of their relationship underlines the story of a dark future. By the end of the film, Taka becomes better known as Scar, and Mufasa reigns as king, but the fact that Scar will eventually kill Mufasa makes it a touch more challenging to enjoy the resolution. And while Jimmy’s life is riddled with struggles, setbacks, and a lack of love from his own brother, the series sees him work through each new challenge in creative and exciting ways. However, the show also provides a glimmer of hope that Jimmy could have a happily ever after. Coriolanus Snow – The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
Coriolanus Snow is a brutal and heartless villain who plagues the Districts as the President of Panem. In The original Hunger Games films, Snow is pulling the strings behind the scenes, and has a direct influence over what happens in the games, and particularly with victors like Katniss Everdeen. However, the prequel movie, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, reveals a more innocent and immature version of the hero.
As a young man, Corio was looked down upon by his peers, and his family fell on hard times after his father’s death. However, he was also determined and resilient. The film shows a very different side to Coriolanus, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when the young man descends into his own paranoia and turns on people he used to trust.

Anakin Skywalker – Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Returning to Star Wars, the original trilogy was the only point when the movies had a linear path, and the story progressed from one moment to the next. This led to one of the most enduring stories of cinema ever told, as Luke Skywalker trains to become a Jedi, fight the forces of darkness, and eventually take part in the fall of the Galactic Empire.

However, when the prequel trilogy was released, it was obvious from the beginning what young Anakin Skywalker would become. Anakin was recognized as having a powerful alignment with the Force, and despite his age, he was brought into the Jedi order under Qui-Gon Jin. Unfortunately, the movies had no real shot at covering up how Anakin would grow to become Darth Vader, and so each movie appeared to push the young man further down that road towards the Dark Side.

Albus Dumbledore – Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them
Last, but certainly not least, the Wizarding World franchise has expanded enormously beyond the humble beginnings which saw it introduce young Harry Potter. The Boy Who Lived was able to confront Voldemort, and eventually rid the world of that awful darkness, but he lost many friends along the way. Snape, the teacher who tormented him but was ultimately proven to be protecting him, Sirius Black, the innocent man who was imprisoned in Azkaban, and his greatest mentor, Albus Dumbledore.
However, when the Fantastic Beasts movies take steps far back in time, and unpack the story of Newt Scamander, there was a great deal of crossover with one familiar character, Dumbledore. The films revealed a much more youthful Albus, when he was in the midst of a sordid romance with the evil Gellert Grindelwald. However, knowing that Albus would go on to be alone, and eventually die protecting Potter, it’s hard not to view him with some degree of sadness. Still, the prequel added a lot to the character and the Wizarding World at large.
