9 Best Movies Like Age Of Adaline On Netflix

Blake Lively’s 2015 movie, The Age of Adaline, is garnering notable success on Netflix at the moment, and audiences who enjoyed that film are sure to like some of Netflix’s other similar films. The Age of Adaline is a historical fantasy romance that centers on the titular Adaline, a young woman born in the early 20th century who faces tragedy after the death of her husband. Soon after, a freak accident nearly kills Adaline, but a miraculous lightning strike not only saves her life, but stops her process of aging. Adaline learns to live and love through time.

Although The Age of Adaline has a very distinct premise, there are plenty of films on Netflix that evoke the same feelings. In general, the best movies to watch after The Age of Adaline are projects that infuse romance with fantasy, history, or some other interesting plot device. These are not your average romance movies, but ones that rework the genre in unique ways. Plus, Netflix also boasts a number of other Lively movies. All in all, audiences who found themselves enthralled by Adaline’s story will almost certainly find other films that are just as captivating and swoonworthy.

The first Netflix film viewers may want to check out after watching The Age of Adaline is Love At First Sight. Based on a novel entitled The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, this film follows a young woman who is traveling to England for her father’s wedding. At the airport, she meets a kind and cute boy who is taking the same flight. After bonding over the course of several hours, the pair’s paths continue to intertwine, implying that perhaps they are fated to be together, regardless of the hardships they are facing in their personal lives.

Love At First Sight may not have the historical elements that The Age of Adaline does, but there’s no denying that the movies are connected by their themes of fate and coincidence. Just as Adaline falls in love with the son of her previous lover, Love At First Sight’s main character can’t seem to shake this young man who simply gets her in a way no one else does. Romance lovers are sure to enjoy Love At First Sight for its sweet characters and heartwrenching moments.

Like The Age of Adaline, It Ends With Us isn’t afraid to veer into darker subjects, and this makes it compelling for many viewers. The 2024 film is certainly centered on love, but it also delves into other areas such as abuse, manipulation, and identity. Though far from being a light-hearted romantic comedy, It Ends With Us will leave audiences with important feelings about the realities of relationships. Plus, Lively gives a strong performance as Lily.

A remake of a classic 1980s romance, Endless Love follows a privileged young woman who falls in love with a working-class boy. Although her parents do not approve of their relationship, the two endeavor to keep seeing each other. If anything, the disapproval makes their affair even more passionate. In this way, their bond goes beyond just a youthful fling, and affects the characters long past their teenage years.

This makes it a perfect follow-up to The Age of Adaline, which is also shadowed by a sense of inevitability due to Adaline’s condition.

Endless Love could be considered a classic romance movie. Unlike a rom-com, which has a bit of silliness to it, Endless Love takes its characters and its romance completely seriously. Their love is tragic, beautiful, and easy to root for, even if it seems doomed from the start. This makes it a perfect follow-up to The Age of Adaline, which is also shadowed by a sense of inevitability due to Adaline’s condition. Yet, both movies offer happy endings, which is a definite plus.

13 Going on 30 is 2004 fantasy romantic comedy about a 13-year-old girl named Jenna Rink, who, in 1987, dreams of being popular and wishes she were “thirty and flirty and thriving.” She later wakes up in 2004 at the age of 30. Jennifer Garner stars as 30-year-old Jenna, while Christa B. Allen plays the role of young Jenna. Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer, Jim Gaffigan, and Andy Serkis also star.

One romance option on Netflix that audiences may overlook is 13 Going On 30. This iconic rom-com follows Jenna, a 13-year-old who makes a birthday wish that she could be 30-years-old already. Shockingly, Jenna’s wish comes true, and she is catapulted into the future, with her 13-year-old mind inside of her 30-year-old body. Soon enough, Jenna learns that adulthood comes with countless downfalls, and that her preexisting judgments may have been wrong all along.

At first glance, 13 Going On 30 seems nothing like The Age of Adaline. The former is goofy, colorful, and never takes itself too seriously. However, 13 Going On 30 is a great companion to The Age of Adaline because both movies play with time and age. In the same way that Adaline suffers from being stuck at 29, Jenna struggles to come to terms with the rigidity of adulthood. All in all, 13 Going On 30 offers a more light-hearted version of The Age of Adaline’s story.

Another rom-com with an unlikely premise is 1999’s Notting Hill. In this film, Hugh Grant is a regular man whose life turns upside down when he rescues a celebrity (played by Julia Roberts) from a horde of paparazzi. The two have an immediate connection, but due to their vastly different lives, are unable to start anything serious. Despite this, they continue running into each other, making their bond harder and harder to ignore.

Although Notting Hill has no elements of fantasy or history, it is amazing how similar it feels to The Age of Adaline. Just like Adaline and Ellis, the main romance in Notting Hill feels impossible. It is not age that separates them, but fame, which is arguably just as powerful. Of course, Notting Hill eventually finds its happy ending, just like The Age of Adaline, but it is moving to see two people become so determined to be together, against all odds.

What may be the most dramatic entry on this list is Legends of the Fall. This Brad Pitt film centers on three brothers living in 20th century Montana who go off to fight in World War I. Tragically, one of the brothers dies, and when the other two return, they find themselves falling for their dead siblings’ gorgeous wife. From there, relationships begin to crack, and a once loving family starts to fall apart.

Legends of the Fall may not be the first movie one thinks about when considering the best romance movies, but that shouldn’t deter anyone from checking out this film. In fact, this is the perfect watch for those who thrive on drama, messiness, and tragedy. Legends of the Fall is great for fans of The Age of Adaline because the movie pulls on the complicated side of love and family. This story isn’t exactly easy, but that makes it all the more satisfying once it reaches its end.

Yet another good historical romance option is The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society. This Netflix movie follows a young journalist during World War II who begins exchanging letters with a man who lives on the island of Guernsey, which is under German occupation. The two bond over a shared love of books, and the journalist soon takes a trip to the island to connect with her pen pal and his book club, despite the imminent danger of the Germans.

This movie is best for those who enjoyed the more historical elements of The Age of Adaline. The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society is steeped in British history, and perfectly balances a sense of impending danger and also nostalgia for the past. With Lily James in the lead role, this is the kind of romance that will melt hearts. Additionally, it may also inspire audiences to read more books.

The Netflix movie that is the closest match to The Age of Adaline is probably 2021’s The Last Letter From Your Lover. The movie centers on a journalist who discovers a series of love letters sent from one of his relatives in the 1960s. From there, he goes on a journey to discover who his ancestor was and learn about the truth of her love affair. By watching this movie, audiences get a sense of how love defies time and era, and how connecting to the past can shed light on who someone is.

The Last Letter From Your Lover is probably the most similar to The Age of Adaline because of its dueling timelines and focus on romance. By watching this movie, audiences get a sense of how love defies time and era, and how connecting to the past can shed light on who someone is.
