All 5 Upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio Movies Explained

After a quiet 2024, Leonardo DiCaprio is gearing up for a return to the big screen, and he has several intriguing projects lined up. DiCaprio’s best movies have found a level of commercial success, establishing his power as a box office draw. Coupled with his outstanding talent and prestige, this makes him a rare kind of movie star. DiCaprio is known for his ability to effortlessly glide between devastating emotionality and surprising comedy. He was initially known as a young Hollywood heart-throb, but he shook off this tag to get the respect that his talents deserve.

Many of Leonardo DiCaprio’s best movies have come from his long-running creative collaboration with Martin Scorsese, and this is set to continue. DiCaprio and Scorsese have a few projects in limbo, but there are a couple of movies which now seem destined to happen. DiCaprio also has movies directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and Damien Chazelle in the works, adding some new collaborations into the mix. Audiences may have missed DiCaprio since Killers of the Flower Moon, but the good news is that he has a lot more to give.

Leonardo DiCaprio Is Teaming Up With Paul Thomas Anderson

Paul Thomas Anderson has always been known as a director who brings great performances out of his actors, so many people have been hoping that he would team up with Leonardo DiCaprio at some point. Anderson has gotten the very best out of other heavyweights like Daniel Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The fact that DiCaprio is joining this list is already exciting, even though the plot of One Battle After Another remains something of a mystery at this point. Until recently, there were rumors that it was going to be called The Battle of Baktan Cross instead.

Some rumors have suggested that One Battle After Another is an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland.

One Battle For Another is set for an August 2025 release, so more details should be coming out soon, although an exact timeframe is hard to pin down. Some rumors have suggested that One Battle After Another is an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland. This would mark Anderson’s second adaptation of a Pynchon novel after Inherent Vice, which is notable since no other director has gotten the rights to the reclusive author’s work. Vineland is a fascinating book to serve as source material, so it will be interesting to see how Anderson captures Pynchon’s freewheeling narrative on film. DiCaprio is set to star alongside Sean Penn, Alana Haim and Regina Hall.

Damien Chazelle’s Evel Knievel Biopic

Recent reports have indicated that Leonardo DiCaprio is in negotiations to star in Damien Chazelle’s new Evel Knievel biopic, which will focus on the American stunt performer’s famous Snake River Canyon jump in 1974. Knievel was just as famous for his bone-breaking crashes as he was for his successful jumps, and the Snake River Canyon jump was one of his most notorious failed attempts. It seems harsh to classify it as a true failure, however, since Knievel’s heroism stemmed from the simple fact that he would invariably get back up and move on to the next stunt after a death-defying crash.

DiCaprio’s involvement in the Evel Knievel movie is still unconfirmed at this stage.

Damien Chazelle has directed just five feature-length movies, but he is putting together an impressive filmography. After the breakout success of Whiplash, he directed the Oscar-nominated musical La La Land. First Man might be the best indication of how his Evel Knievel movie might take form, since the Neil Armstrong biopic also focuses on an American hero who symbolized the national spirit to many people. Chazelle has worked with plenty of great actors in his career already, overseeing brilliant performances from Emma Stone, J. K. Simmons, Ryan Gosling and Miles Teller to name a few. DiCaprio could easily add his name to this list.

Leonardo DiCaprio has appeared in many of Martin Scorsese’s best movies, and their creative partnership looks destined to continue with fresh reports of a new crime drama. While it comes as no surprise that they’re teaming up, the big shock in the cast is Dwayne Johnson. The former wrestler has become one of Hollywood’s most bankable movie stars, but he isn’t known for dramas, sticking mostly to action blockbusters and comedies. A collaboration with Scorsese could potentially open a new chapter in his career, especially since he also has an A24 biopic directed by Benny Safdie on the horizon.

DiCaprio and Johnson will be joined by Oscar-nominee Emily Blunt in Scorsese’s new project, and some story details have already been revealed. Johnson is set to play a Hawaiian mob boss, reportedly based on a real person, who fights to protect his ancestral home from outside influences coming from mainland America. It has been described as a riff on Goodfellas, perhaps suggesting that it will chronicle the entire rise and fall of a notorious criminal. It’s unclear how DiCaprio and Blunt will fit into the story, but having so much talent on show can only be a good thing. The big question is whether Johnson can keep up.

The Devil In The White City

Scorsese And DiCaprio Have Another Project Lined Up

H.H Holmes aka The Devil in the White City

The Hawaiian crime drama isn’t the only upcoming movie that Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are set to collaborate on. Continuing their long-running creative partnership, the duo are reviving their adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City. News of the adaptation first broke back in 2010, but the movie languished in development hell for over a decade. It looked for a while as if it would be another one of Martin Scorsese’s unrealized projects, but recent reports suggest that The Devil in the White City has risen from the dead. Precisely how this happened is still a mystery.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have made six feature-length movies together, starting with 2002’s Gangs of New York.

The Devil in the White City is a novelistic non-fiction book about H. H. Holmes, widely considered to be America’s first serial killer. Holmes famously constructed an elaborate “Murder Castle” using different architects and contractors. Once the hotel was completed, with nobody else knowing about the secret passageways, trap doors and the basement, Holmes murdered guests who stayed there during the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair. Holmes’ story has fascinated true-crime enthusiasts ever since, making it an intriguing premise for a movie. DiCaprio could play Holmes, or he could play the architect Daniel Burnham, another key figure in Larson’s book.

Howl

DiCaprio May Star In A New Environmental Fable

Leonardo DiCaprio has often used his platform to speak about pressing environmental issues around the world, and this climate-conscious attitude also affects his acting work. The 2021 comedy Don’t Look Up satirizes the way politicians and media outlets have responded to climate change, and DiCaprio has also narrated a few environmental documentaries. Howl is similarly concerned with the natural world, telling the story of an orphaned dog who forms an unlikely bond with a young wolf in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Although this sounds like an animated movie, Howl has enlisted Hollywood animal trainer Andrew Simpson, which suggests it will be a live-action movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the executive producers on Howl alongside famous primatologist and environmental activist Jane Goodall. This is an unexpected collaboration in some ways, but DiCaprio and Goodall share a passion for the natural world. At this early stage, it’s unknown whether DiCaprio will also be acting in Howl. This would certainly boost the movie’s profile and open it up to a wider distribution, but initial reports don’t mention any casting. It’s possible that Howl may not even have any human characters, since producers have stated that the story is told from an animal’s perspective. It’s certainly an interesting project, even if DiCaprio might not appear in front of the camera.

Other Projects In Limbo

DiCaprio Has Some Other Movies That May Or May Not Happen

Most big-name Hollywood actors have several projects in the works at once, although not all of these projects come to fruition. Leonardo DiCaprio is no different, as there have been several reports over the years about potential new movies that he could star in, but subsequent information has been hard to find. Just like with The Devil in the White City, any one of these movies might suddenly spring back to life at any moment, or they may fall deeper into development hell and never come out. DiCaprio seems to have a lot on his plate in the near future, but it’s worth keeping an eye on some of these other projects.

Scorsese and DiCaprio announced an adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling history book The Wager.

Among DiCaprio’s projects that may or may not get made is a Theodore Roosevelt biopic directed by Martin Scorsese. DiCaprio and Scorsese announced the movie back in 2017, but they appear to have moved on to other projects. Another movie they announced was an adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling history book The Wager, which tells the story of a famous mutiny in 1741. This movie could have a better shot at being made, since Scorsese and DiCaprio already adapted Grann’s previous book, Killers of the Flower Moon. DiCaprio was also announced as the star of a Jim Jones biopic back in 2021, but that project is also in limbo.
