Released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a puzzle-platform game developed by Nintendo Software Technology. A spiritual sequel to the 1994 Game Boy game Donkey Kong, the game blends platforming and puzzle elements. Mario vs. Donkey Kong returns to its arcade-style roots, reminiscent of the early games, and incorporates elements of the Game Boy original. The game retains Rare’s design influence on Donkey Kong, who initially served as the villain, but returns to the villain role in the storyline. Donkey Kong is looking for a Mini Mario wind-up toy, but is frustrated to find that a local toy store has sold out. Frustrated, he scares the Toads in the factory and decides to steal the toy. The plot of the game has Mario chasing Donkey Kong in order to get the Mini Mario back.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong also supports hidden e-readers. In Japan, a contest distributed cards to 1,000 participants, and CoroCoro Comic released five level cards. Another card was given away at the 20th World Hobby Expo. The game allows players to save up to 12 additional levels.

I’m considering pre-ordering Mario vs. Donkey Kong for possible bonuses, but unfortunately, no pre-order bonuses have been announced for this game in North America. Given the near release date, the likelihood of Nintendo or retailers announcing any exclusive pre-order bonuses is low. This is in line with the general trend of Nintendo’s niche releases, where pre-order bonuses are not common. While this may be disappointing to those who were hoping for extra bonuses, it is in line with industry norms.
In contrast, if you live in the UK and choose to purchase the game from the My Nintendo store, the pre-order bonus will bring you a little consolation – a keychain with Mario and Donkey Kong images. However, for US users, the effort to obtain this keychain may outweigh its appeal. Mario vs. Donkey Kong is not available in any other version, and the standard and digital versions are almost identical. Not having different versions simplifies the decision process and allows players to choose digital or physical media based on personal preference. It is worth noting that the game is priced at $50, which is a slightly more affordable option compared to the standard $60 pricing of other Nintendo games.

Mario and Donkey Kong Gameplay
In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, players play as Mario as he attempts to retrieve the stolen Mini Mario toys from Donkey Kong at the toy factory. This puzzle platformer, similar to the Game Boy Donkey Kong, provides Mario with various movement moves, such as handstands, somersaults, and triple jumps, to navigate the platforming stages. The game features different environments, such as lava areas and construction sites, with a total of five types of levels. In the main levels, Mario grabs keys, opens doors, and retrieves the Mini Mario toys.

The second is to guide six Mini Mario toys into the toy box and protect them. Boss levels require Mario to fight Donkey Kong, while Plus levels are more challenging and require a key to activate Mini Mario. The Expert level, accessible after completing the Overworld, is the hardest and Mario must find a key to find the door. In Plus and Expert modes, reaching the door completes the level without entering the second part.
Mario and Donkey Kong Story
Mario runs a toy company that sells wind-up toys called “Mini Marios”. Donkey Kong sees a commercial for the Mini Marios on TV, falls in love with them and goes to buy one. Unfortunately, they are sold out, which makes Donkey Kong angry. In a rage, he breaks into Mario’s toy factory, scares Todd’s workers, and steals all the Mini Marios. Determined to get his toys back, Mario chases Donkey Kong, rescues the Mini Marios, and battles Donkey Kong.
After retrieving all the toys, Mario and the others laugh at Donkey Kong. In revenge, Donkey Kong kidnaps Todd and holds them captive in a tall building. Mario climbs the tower, rescues Todd, and battles Donkey Kong again. Donkey Kong falls onto a truck carrying a new Mini-Mario and steals them, sparking another chase. Mario retrieves most of the toys, but faces a final battle with Donkey Kong, who rides a giant robot. After defeating Donkey Kong, Mario consoles him, gives him a free Mini-Mario, and they celebrate together.
