Aubrey Plaza’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

The best Aubrey Plaza movies and TV shows have helped her become a geek favorite, thanks to her appearances in everything from superhero properties to great comedy sitcoms. Plaza was born in Delaware and decided to get into acting because she loved films in general. She attended the New York Film Academy and the New York University Tisch School of the Arts while also studying Improv and sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

This led to her getting some notice and small roles until she got her big break with a small role in Judd Apatow’s Funny People. She did so well there that she was invited to audition for Parks and Recreation, the role that made her a star. Since that time, Plaza has developed a reputation as an actress who has a keen eye for geek entertainment, with comic roles in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Legion, and Agatha All Along, as well as horror films like This is Beth and Child’s Play.

Child’s Play

R

Child’s Play is a 2019 remake of Tom Holland’s 1988 film of the same name. Instead of Chucky being a Good Guy doll, he is now a high-tech Buddi doll that becomes evil after a disgruntled factory worker disables his safety protocols and ends his own life. Child’s Play received mixed to negative reviews, and after Don Mancini released his Chucky TV show, any ideas for a sequel were shelved.

Aubrey Plaza was part of the Child’s Play reboot movie in 2019. While many fans of the original complained about the changes made to Chucky in the reboot, they got a new series thanks to the backlash, and that was exactly what old-school fans wanted to see. However, there is a lot to like about the new Child’s Play movie if a person can get past it changing Chucky from a possessed doll into an AI doll with all its safety protocols disabled.

Plaza plays Karen Barclay and is one of two geek-favorite actors signing on, as Star Wars veteran Mark Hammil signed on to voice Chucky. Karen is Andy’s mother, and she sets out to help protect her son from the murderous Chucky and the Buddi dolls that he activated. While the movie still has Andy as the hero who eventually stops Chucky, Plaza is great in her role as his mom, who refuses to believe his tales of a killer doll on the loose.

Aubrey Plaza had a chance to go full zombie in the 2014 romantic horror comedy Life After Beth. In the movie, Plaza plays Beth, a young woman who dies at the start of the story after a snake bites her. Beth’s boyfriend, Zach (Dane DeHaan) goes into a deep depression after the death, but also admits that the two were struggling in their relationship before she died. So, Zach is astonished when he finds Beth still alive but locked in her parent’s home.

Beth is also a zombie, but she doesn’t know it and still has some of her mental facilities intact. However, she is slowly losing control, and Zach has to figure out what he should do about it when she demands that they remain together. While critics were not amused, giving the film a low 45% Rotten Tomatoes score, they did praise Plaza’s “committed performance” as the volatile Beth slowly giving in to her more carnal desires.

Critics lauded the story and Plaza’s acting, awarding the movie a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics praised Plaza’s performance in general, they also complimented the movie for keeping her as a flawed character and not giving her an easy way out or making her a hero when there was no reason for that to happen. The movie was such a success critically that a TV show is in the works, although Plaza is not expected to return to the role.

In 2024, Kathryn Hahn returned to her role as Agatha Harkness in a Disney+ Marvel series that followed the events of WandaVision. In this miniseries, Agatha is still trapped in Westview, with no memories of who she is, thanks to the spell that Wanda put on her. However, when a young man named William asks her to take him to the Witch’s Road, Agatha regains her memories and puts together a coven to take the journey, where they all have a chance to achieve their deepest desires.

Aubrey Plaza stars as Rio Vadal, an old acquaintance of Agatha who seemingly wants to kill her because of a betrayal from years before when the two were lovers. Rio ends up as the main villain in the end, although getting there is the fun part. Plaza was fantastic in the role as the often bemused and sometimes playful Rio, and is a nice counter to Agatha’s more overt antagonistic nature. Since Plaza’s character is immortal, there is a chance she could return in a future MCU project.

As with the first season, there is a murder, but this time it is the bodies of multiple guests from The White Lotus resort in Sicily that were found at the start of the first episode before the series jumps back in time to show what happened. However, the Plaza storyline has little to do with the murder mystery and is instead a story of a couple who has lost the passion in their relationship. Plaza received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance but lost to co-star Jennifer Coolidge.

Aubrey Plaza enjoyed her breakout on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation. Similar to The Office, Parks and Recreation plays out like a mockumentary and is a political satire about the government agency that runs a Parks Department in a small Indiana town. While the show featured several breakout actors, including Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari, Chris Pratt, and Amy Poehler, it also introduced Plaza to the world.

Plaza plays April Ludgate, a college student who gets a job as an intern for the Pawnee Department of Parks and Recreation before being hired as Ron Swanson’s (Offerman) assistant. Plaza received universal praise for her performance, often speaking in a deadpan, monotone manner, almost seeming to be bored by everything around her. This was the role that showed the world how talented Plaza is.

Aubrey Plaza took on the role of Julie Powers in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Julie was someone who couldn’t stand Scott and always took the time to give him a hard time. The movie, based on the comics by Bryan Lee O’Malley, follows a slacker musician named Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) who meets a young woman named Romona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and falls in love with her instantly. However, he then learns he has to defeat her seven evil exes to win her love.

While Julie is mostly an unimportant character, she is the one person who seems to connect everyone in the story together and is often the person who delivers the most cutting lines, especially to Scott himself. Humorously, most of her cursing is censored, which is a joke itself in the story. Plaza returned to the role in the Netflix anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, an anime reworking of the original story that brought back most of the main cast to voice the same characters again.

In 2017, Aubrey Plaza joined the Marvel Comics series Legion in a very unique role. In what was surely a shock to comic book fans, she played the villain role of Amahl Farouk, also known as The Shadow King. While Shadow King is a man, he takes the role of a young woman to get close to David Haller, a powerful mutant diagnosed with schizophrenia. The two meet in a mental health hospital where they are institutionalized and become friends before she dies, and Amahl returns posing in her body.

Aubrey Plaza really dived into the role, playing the character as a male and female, which went a long way into making Shadow King one of the most unique Marvel villains in movies or on TV. Plaza played the character for all three seasons, although Navid Negahban also took on the role in the second and third as well. Plaza earned the MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Villain in 2018.
