The technology behind Disney+ was developed by Disney Streaming Services, which originated as BAMTech in 2015 when it was separated from MLB Advanced Media. In 2017, Disney acquired a controlling stake in BAMTech and later transferred ownership to DTCI as part of a corporate restructuring in preparation for Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
After launching ESPN+ in 2018 with the help of BAMTech, Disney decided to leverage the technology developed for ESPN+ to create a Disney-branded streaming service that would showcase its extensive content library. The production of exclusive films and TV shows for Disney+ began in 2017.
Disney+ made its debut on November 12, 2019, in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. It expanded to Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico a week later. The service gradually became available in select European countries starting from March 2020 and in India in April through the rebranded Disney+ Hotstar, which was previously known as Hotstar and owned by Star India.
Additional European countries gained access to Disney+ in September 2020, followed by a launch in Latin America in November 2020. Since 2021, Disney+ has expanded to several Southeast Asian countries, and from May 2022, it has been introduced to countries in Northern and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Africa.
At launch, Disney+ received positive feedback for its extensive content library, but it also faced criticism for technical glitches and missing content. Changes made to certain films and television shows also drew media attention. Despite these initial challenges, Disney+ garnered significant attention, with ten million users subscribing on its first day. As of April 1, 2023, Disney+ has amassed an impressive 157.8 million global subscribers
