Camila Mendes’ 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Camila Mendes
made her debut as Veronica Lodge in Riverdale in 2017, and though she has only appeared in a handful of acting projects since her best movies and TV shows indicate she is a rising star. Mendes was educated at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and her roles so far have demonstrated that she is a talented actress, singer, and dancer. Several of her roles have allowed her to showcase all of those abilities.

Because Riverdale’s Veronica is Mendes’ longest-running role to date, it’s likely the role she will be known for throughout the next chapter of her career. As she moves on from roles as high school students, however, it’s likely Camila Mendes will gain a larger audience and continue to appear in more diverse roles. She will appear in her first big action-adventure role when she plays Teela in the Masters of the Universe movie in 2026.

For most regular actors on The Simpsons, the long-running animated sitcom would rank near the top of their best movies and tv shows. For Camila Mendes, however, that is not the case because she has only appeared in a single episode of the show. If Mendes gets to lend her voice to the show again, that could easily change.

The Simpsons follows the titular family that never ages – even though the show has been on for over 30 years. A lot of the episodes focus on the antics of son Bart or work problems of dad Homer. This episode provides a good Lisa storyline though. Lisa makes a new friend at school and is invited to a sleepover where she discovers the other girls are bullies, and she has only been invited by her new friend (who does really like her) so that they will bully someone else for a change.

Mendes appears as one of those bullies. It’s a bit of stunt casting because she also appears alongside her Riverdale costars Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Pestch. While it’s a cute way to incorporate the stars on the rise into the show, The Simpsons likely could have found even funnier roles for them.

Dangerous Lies is one of the few thrillers in Mendes’ movies. The movie was created for Netflix and is one of the earliest projects to place Mendes in the lead role.

The movie sees Katie and her boyfriend plagued by money problems. After the diner where she works is robbed, her boyfriend insists she finds a safer job, and she ends up as the caregiver for a wealthy older man. After the two bond, he ends up dead, and suspicion falls on her boyfriend, though there are plenty of other shady characters in the movie.

The cast of Dangerous Lies is great. Mendes in particular is adept at her role, likely because she is used to playing up mysterious circumstances on Riverdale already. The dialogue is a little clunky, however, and while there is an attempt to look back to the erotic thrillers like Fatal Attraction or Basic Instinct, the movie does not quite make it.

The New Romantic was launched at South by Southwest in 2018, but it received a limited theatrical release, so it’s likely a lot of Camila Mendes fans did not get the chance to see this movie. It’s one that provides an interesting look at modern journalism and modern relationships though.

Blake (Jessica Barden) is a journalism student who writes an anonymous romance column for the school paper. When the editor starts to think her column is stale, she looks for a new way to spice it up and finds inspiration in Morgan (Mendes), a sugar baby who dates older men in exchange for gifts. Blake thinks writing about the experiences might get her a journalism award, but the line starts to blur when it comes to what is and is not ethical since she is writing from her own perspective, but also writing about the real sex lives of other people.

Mendes plays a supporting role here because the movie really belongs to Barden whose character grapples with her own dreams and the ramifications of her actions when she decides to try the sugar baby lifestyle out for herself. Mendes is fully capable in the role, but she is not the biggest player in the movie.

More of Mendes’ fans might have seen this movie than The New Romantic because it’s another Netflix exclusive. This time around, with Netflix It Boy Noah Centineo in the main role. Again, Mendes plays a supporting role.

The focus here is on Centineo as Brooks. Brooks is from a working-class family and he has dreams of going to Yale. When he is paid to be the plus-one for a friend’s wealthy cousin at an event to get her parents off her back, he thinks it’s the perfect way to make money. He and his friend design an app that allows high school girls to purchase his company for events that would need a date. Along the way, Brooks loses a bit of himself in the process as he makes sure every outing is tailored to the interests of the girl he is with and never his own.

Mendes appears as Shelby, a wealthy classmate of the first young woman Brooks goes out with. He develops a crush on her before discovering she is a bit of a snob and would not normally give the working class the time of day. Mendes gets to be at her haughtiest here, but she is also still likable as Shelby’s chief complaint about Brooks when discovering the truth is that he is a liar.

Palm Springs is one of the most interesting time loop movies of recent years. In it, two people (Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti) end up caught in the loop while attending the wedding. While they go on numerous adventures together, they also fall in love within the loop, and the movie poses existential questions about whether to move on with life (or death) or stay in a limited and potentially perfect space among other things.

Milioti plays the sister of the bride while Samberg is a guest at the wedding because his girlfriend is a bridesmaid. Mendes appears as the bride. While she is not the focus of the time loop, she still has a somewhat challenging role in the movie. After all, in time loop movies, everyone other than the characters repeating the loop has to stay almost exactly the same in all of their appearances. Continuity is a must. Mendes does a fantastic job.

Palm Springs won a Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy and was nominated for two Golden Globes.

Coyote Lake (2019)

This independent movie is also an early move from Mendes’ career that it’s likely not too many have seen. It’s a shame it did not get a wider release because it is one of Mendes’ higher-rated movies on sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

Coyote Lake follows a young woman (Mendes) who runs a bed and breakfast with her mother near the border of the US and Mexico. The mother-daughter team, however, does not just make their living due to people checking in. They also kill people and dispose of them. When a pair of drug dealers book a stay, the young woman begins to look for a way out of the life she knows.

The premise of Coyote Lake is a unique one, especially in an era when the United States has become obsessed with its borders. Mendes is perfect in the role as the audience is able to see her as a victim of her mother’s manipulation as much as they are able to see her as guilty of horrible things. Mendes plays the role with the kind of restraint that keeps her character from going too far, and it is a great showcase for how powerful of a performer she can be.

The tropes here might be familiar, but they do not feel stale.

Upgraded gives a modern twist on Cinderella. Instead of a fairy godmother, Ana (Mendes) finds herself with a whole lot of good luck.

Ana is struggling as an employee at an art gallery. She lives with her stepsister (Aimee Carerro) because she cannot afford a place of her own. She ends up as the assistant to the assistants of her boss thanks to picking up on a single error, and being upgraded to first-class on a flight helps her cross paths with the guy of her dreams. In true romantic comedy fashion, however, Ana allows the guy and everyone he knows to believe she is the director of the gallery instead of an assistant, leading to some complications in her modern fairy tale.

One of the fun aspects of romantic comedies like this one is finding all of the parallels to Cinderella. There are many, right down to Ana running out of a party early to avoid being exposed. Mendes provides a fresh take on classic tropes here though, aided in part by director Carlson Young. This is only Young’s second feature, and audiences might know her better as an actor herself, most notably as Brooke in MTV’s Scream series.

Upgraded is able to use the bare bones of a classic fairy tale with fresh takes and a great cast to avoid falling into the pitfalls of rom-com tropes. The tropes here might be familiar, but they do not feel stale.

Riverdale is Mendes’ best-known role. She will likely be recognized as Veronica Lodge for years to come. Riverdale is also Mendes’ first professional acting role, so it’s impressive that it is one of her best.

Riverdale takes the characters and locations from the classic Archie comics and brings them to the modern day. While it follows Archie (KJ Apa) and his friends through high school and beyond, it also plays with genres. The series begins as a teen drama with an edge of mystery, but it also becomes a thriller with a serial killer on the loose and a cult in another season and adds a little time-traveling and fantasy magic for good measure. Riverdale is never afraid to get campy or throw in a musical number, and that helps make it one of a kind.

As Veronica, Mendes plays the new girl in town when the series begins. She is wealthy, not afraid of ruffling a few feathers, and always goes after what she wants. That makes her stand out from the first moment she enters Riverdale. Over time, however, Mendes is able to make Veronica as vulnerable as she is strong, and she becomes a fan favorite. She also gets the chance to show of her vocal talents as she sings in several episodes of the series.

Riverdale was nominated for 12 Saturn Awards during its run, winning two.

It provides one of her most authentic performances…

Música is partially inspired by Rudy Mancuso’s own experiences. While Mancuso is better known for his work in comedy, here, he is the director, writer, executive producer, and composer for the movie in addition to starring in it alongside Mendes.

Rudy (Mancuso) is a struggling musician who often finds himself butting heads with his mother, who often pushes him to embrace his Brazilian heritage. He often finds himself distracted due to synesthesia, a rare phenomenon in which a person experiences two conflicting senses because of the way their neural pathways work, like hearing colors or seeing music. While his mother tries to find him a girlfriend, he finds himself drawn to Isabella (Mendes), who appreciates the experiences synesthesia gives him.

This romantic comedy is charming and fun, but the reason it is ranked so highly among Mendes’ films is because it’s one of the rare movies that sees her embrace her real-life Brazilian heritage. That heritage plays a large role in the movie, as does the experience that Mendes and Mancuso bring to their roles as Brazilian-Americans and artists. It provides one of her most authentic performances, even though the movie uses magical realism to give a more fantastical element to the story.

Magical realism is particularly popular in South American literature, like in the books of Jorge Amado (Brazil) and Isabel Allende (Chile).

In her career so far, Do Revenge is Camila Mendes’ best movie. The Netflix original is one of the first projects she had that was widely seen outside of Riverdale.

When popular Drea (Mendes) finds an intimate video sent to her boyfriend leaked to the rest of the school, her reputation tanks, and her relationship is over. No one believes that her boyfriend leaked the video, and she becomes a social outcast. After befriending a new student who wants revenge on someone she knows from summer camp, the two agree to get revenge for one another so no one will suspect their scheming.

Writer and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was inspired by Taylor Swift’s Reputation album while working on the movie.

Do Revenge is a black comedy that feels like a spiritual successor to Mean Girls and Jawbreaker while still employing elements of Clueless, Cruel Intentions, and even Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train. It takes many of the best elements of teen comedies and combines them in one pastel-colored and hilarious package.

Mendes so rarely gets to be funny in her other roles as so many of her early projects have been dramas. Here, she gets to pull on her dramatic side as well as her comedic side with one of her best (and most viral) moments in the movie being a dry delivery of “shocked, I’m shocked,” at an assembly where the rest of the student body is up in arms as she sips her drink coolly. Her line deliveries are top-notch and her transformation into a woman seeking vengeance is outstanding.

Do Revenge proves that Camila Mendes will likely be a leading lady for many years to come.
