Their debut album, Exit Planet Dust, was a huge success, selling over 1 million copies and reaching number nine in the UK charts. However, since another band was already using the name “The Dust Brothers”, they later changed their name to “The Chemical Brothers”. This name change did not hamper their success. After signing with Virgin Records, the duo gained greater recognition with their second album, Dig Your Own Hole, released in 1997.

The formation of the Chemical Brothers
The formation of The Chemical Brothers, one of a pioneering electronic music duo, is an interesting story rooted in their shared passion for music and their journey through various musical endeavors:
Ed Simmons background

Ed Simmons was born on June 9, 1970, and has a unique growth experience. His mother is a lawyer and his father is what he describes as “absent.” Despite these circumstances, Ed excelled academically, attending an expensive state school, where he achieved 11 O-levels and 3 A-levels. His educational journey eventually took him to the University of Manchester, where he studied for a degree in history, with a particular focus on late medieval history.
Tom Rowlands’ musical journey
Born on January 11, 1971, Tom Rowlands grew up in Henley-on-Thames with a passion for music. His musical journey began even before he met Ed Simmons. Tom met Ed in 1989 at the University of Manchester, where they discovered a mutual interest in the emerging rave and club culture. Their fascination with the music scene, particularly Manchester’s famous Fac 51 Hacienda nightclub, played a key role in their budding partnership.
Before working with Ed, Tom Rowlands had been in a band called Ariel. They embarked on a musical journey with friends Brendan Melk and Matthew Berry. Their debut single “Sea of Beats” was released on white label. Later, they formed the band Ariel in London and released songs such as “Mustn’t Grumble” and “Rollercoaster”.
The Birth of the Chemical Brothers
In 1989, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons started DJing together at a club called Naked Under Leather behind a bar. This marked the beginning of their musical collaboration, operating under the alias “237 Turbo Nutters”, a reference to their house numbers and their shared experiences in rave culture. Their journey ultimately led them to create their own music. They recorded a track called “Song to the Siren”, which sampled This Mortal Coil, using a Hitachi Hi-Fi system, Atari ST, samplers and keyboards. This marked the birth of their own record label, Diamond Records, named after Ed’s nickname.
The Chemical Brothers (later known as The Chemical Brothers) faced an initial challenge when London’s dance record stores refused to play their first song, “The Siren’s Song,” considering it too slow. However, it caught the attention of London DJ Andrew Weatherall, who championed it on his DJ shows. This exposure led to the official release of Siren’s Song in May 1993.

As their music gained recognition, the duo embarked on an international journey, touring the United States and playing alongside other notable electronic music acts. Over the objections of the original Dust brothers, Rowlands and Simmons decided to adopt a new name. Inspired by the song “Chemical Beats”, they officially changed their name to “The Chemical Brothers”. In June 1995, they released their first single under their new identity, “Leave Home”, which marked the beginning of their journey as The Chemical Brothers.
