Entergalactic is an adult-animated film created by Kid Cudi that explores the relationship between an artist and a photographer as they are on the cusp of their dreams. Largely inspired by the ground-breaking animation in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the animation in Entergalactic is also stunning, contributing to the overall laid-back vibe and atmosphere the film was aiming for. It’s unique among most American animation, with an impressively sweet romance at the center.

Christopher Abbott’s part in Entergalactic isn’t major by any means, but he does an impressive job with his first role as a voice actor. He plays Reed, an art dealer who is friends with Kid Cudi’s Jabari, and the two of them have great chemistry together when they appear on-screen. An adaptation of the novel of the same name by author Joseph Heller, Catch-22 is a satirical dark comedy about a U.S. Army Air Forces bombardier who grows increasingly irritated that people he doesn’t know keep trying to kill him during World War II, as well as he keeps getting his missions increased throughout. Catch-22 hilariously captures the absurdity of war without ever losing sight of how horrific it truly is.
Christopher Abbott leads the series with a committed performance as Capt. John Yossarian, who goes to great lengths to try to stay alive as he remains frustrated with people trying to kill him. Christopher Abbott does an incredible job balancing the absurd humor and the horror his character faces, an impressive feat that does justice to the source material Catch-22 is adapting, making it one of Abbott’s most entertaining performances.

It Comes At Night is a slow-burn, psychological horror film that focuses on a family hiding and living in a forest after Earth has been ravaged by a mysterious and highly contagious disease. What works so well with It Comes At Night is the film’s insistence on moving at its own pace, very slowly setting the overall tone and the atmosphere that continues to build once the family welcomes another family into their lives.

With an absolute masterclass of a performance by Emma Stone, Poor Things is considered by many to be the best movie by director Yorgos Lanthimos. It follows the journey of Stone’s Bella Baxter, a young woman who has been brought back to life via a brain transplant, and quickly experiences the world around her. Offbeat, poignant, and just a little bit weird, Poor Things is unlike anything else, and has a lot to say about exploitation and coming to terms with discovering one’s self.

Despite having only a few films under his belt, Brandon Cronenberg is one of the strongest horror directors right now, and Possessor might just be his best. The movie follows an assassin who does her job by possessing the bodies of others but struggles to remain in control of her current host. Stylish and disturbing, Possessor is timely with its themes and has a lot on its mind beyond the horror that is displayed on the screen.
Brandon Cronenberg is the son of legendary horror director, David Cronenberg.
Christopher Abbott is simply remarkable in Possessor, playing Colin Tate, the man possessed by Andrea Riseborough’s Tasya Vos. Given that Tasya Vos is struggling with fully taking control of Tate, Christopher Abbott is tasked with playing essentially two different characters at times, and he fully portrays that horror and struggle perfectly, with one of the best performances of his career.

While HBO is largely known for prestige adult dramas, it also has an incredible selection of comedies, with Girls being one of their best. Created by and starring Lena Dunham, Girls follows the lives of four young women in New York City, exploring their friendships and relationships along the way. It’s a poignant, and often messy, look at finding one’s place in the world, while dealing with a variety of social issues that face women.
Girls was the first major role of Christopher Abbott’s career and also his breakthrough, as he played Charlie Dattolo, ex-boyfriend of Allison Williams’ Marnie Michaels. While the couple tries to make it work, they ultimately fall apart, leading to Abbott’s departure from the series after season 2. Despite an early exit, he is fantastic in the role, making him a complex character that grew in depth as his story progressed.
