Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Route Map, Expected Start Date, Budget and Current Status

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is a major infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between Delhi and Dehradun. The expressway is approximately 210 kilometers long and is designed as a six- to twelve-lane access controlled road.

It is expected that upon completion, travel time will be significantly reduced from approximately 6.5 hours to 2.5 hours, providing greater convenience to commuters and travelers.

Initiated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), construction of the project began in February 2021 and is expected to be completed in January 2025.

The estimated budget of the highway is about Rs 13,000 crore. It will pass through major cities like Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur and incorporate features such as wildlife corridors to protect the local fauna.

The highway also aims to improve road safety and provide modern facilities such as rest stops every 25 to 30 kilometers. Once completed, it will greatly benefit commuters and tourists traveling between Delhi and Uttarakhand.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Opening Date

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to be opened to traffic in January 2025. Completion was originally expected to be December 2024, but recent updates indicate a slight delay.

Once operational, the expressway will significantly reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from about 6.5 hours to 2.5 hours.

The first phase of the expressway connecting Delhi’s Akshardham to Baghpat will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in late December 2024 or early January 2025.

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is currently under construction and is expected to be opened to traffic in January 2025. The project aims to significantly reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from about 6.5 hours to 2.5 hours.

So far, the first phase of the project, with a total length of 32 kilometers from Delhi’s Akshardham to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), is nearing completion and is expected to be put into operation in December 2024.

The entire expressway is approximately 210 kilometers long and includes features such as Asia’s longest elevated wildlife corridor to minimize human-animal conflicts.

The expressway will also connect to Haridwar and is expected to be completed by May 2025. The project, with a total estimated cost of around Rs 13,000 crore, is government-funded and developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The entire Dehradun Expressway project is expected to be completed within the next three months, reducing the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun to just two hours.

Gadkari also highlighted other upcoming highways, including the Mumbai-Delhi Expressway, which will reduce travel time to Jaipur to two hours.

Delhi to Amritsar in just 4 hours and Delhi to Mumbai in 12 hours, these major travel times are part of a larger plan to build 36 green highways across India.
